Central football closes season with 27-20 district win

Senior running back Derek Walker rushed for more than 200 yards in his final game as the Tigers ended a disappointing football season with a 27-20 victory over Sikeston on senior night at Houck Stadium on Thursday.

Central picked up its first district win and just its second victory of the season, concluding with a 2-8 record.

Walker accounted for two of the Tigers' four touchdowns, scoring on runs of 44 and 14 yards.

Walker's 14-yard run put Central on the scoreboard in the second quarter after Sikeston had taken its only lead in the first quarter on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Chase Ferrell to Demetrius Jackson. Tyler McNabb's PAT put Central ahead 7-6.

Central increased its lead to 14-6 with 1:17 left in the half when Central freshman quarterback Andrew Williams connected on a 16-yard pass to Chase Johnson.

Sikeston trimmed the lead to 14-12 at 8:23 of the third quarter when Jarian Wims broke loose for a 31-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs failed to pull even when their 2-point conversion failed.

Central pulled away 27-12 with two touchdowns in the period, the first coming on a 32-yard pass from Johnson to Raymond Woldvedt and the second on Walker's 44-yard run.

Ferrell connected with Jackson again to cut the score to 27-20 with 7:18 left, but Central held on for the win.

Hayti 64, St. Vincent 20

Hayti opened a 56-7 lead at halftime and never looked back as it captured the Class 1 District 2 title.

Shaun Jones ran for two scores and threw for another as Hayti (10-0) rolled.

Darin Yamnitz went 10-of-17 for 158 yards and three scores to lead St. Vincent (4-6). He completed a 45-yard scoring pass to Kyle Rollet in the second quarter, a 24-yard TD pass to Aaron Dzik in the third quarter and a 5-yarder to Rollet with 45 seconds left in the game.

Hayti rushed for 439 yards and threw for another 72 yards in the game.

BOYS SWIMMINGConference meet

Central scored 358 points to edge Notre Dame for the conference title, which was held in Poplar Bluff.

Sam Gramling and Peyton Waggener both won two individual events and swam on the victorious 200 medley relay to lead the Tigers.

The Bulldogs won the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay behind the efforts of Logan Bollinger, Sean Doyle, Jacob Buckenmyer and Ben Rockett.

Dustin Kaminskey was a double winner for the Indians.
