Central's baseball team had no trouble picking up an 11-1 SEMO Conference win on the road against New Madrid County Central in five innings Tuesday.
Central grabbed an 8-0 lead after the second inning and cruised to its third straight victory.
"We swung the bats well today, and that helps your pitching relax and your defense relax," Central coach Steve Williams said.
Chris Conrad went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs batted in for the Tigers. Mark Dunaway and Colin Scherman added two hits each.
John Thies picked up the victory, pitching three shutout innings and striking out three.
Central improved to 9-6 overall and a second-place 5-1 in the SEMO Conference.
Central's junior varsity won 9-3 behind the pitching of Matt Hellrich.
Advance 2, Leopold 0
Eric O'Hare struck out 16 batters and tossed a one-hitter as Advance (8-5) blanked visiting Leopold.
O'Hare also drove in the only two runs of the day for Advance with a groundout in the first and a double in the third. Jason Bahr scored two runs and stole two bases.
A.J. Seiler accounted for Leopold's only hit. Josh Van de Ven allowed just four hits but took the loss.
Oak Ridge 24, Meadow Heights 18
Zach Ruesler went 5-for-5 with nine RBIs as Oak Ridge won at home.
Oak Ridge scored in every inning and pounded out 14 hits. Brian Ruesler, Alex Fadler and Kyle Berry added two hits apiece for Oak Ridge (2-5). Terry Bogenpohl pitched 3 2/3 innings for the win.
Delta 5, Zalma 2
Tanner Baggett went nine innings as Delta picked up its second win of the season at home.
The Bobcats (2-8) scored a run in the seventh to tie the game 2-2 and then scored three in the ninth to win.
Baggett went 3-for-4, along with Cody Crowden for Delta. Brent Menz and A.J. Begley added two hits apiece for the Bobcats.
Andy Sites, Brad McKlin and Steven McCain each had two hits for Zalma.
Woodland 12, Chaffee 8
Woodland scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning and rallied for a road victory over Chaffee.
Woodland (8-4) banged out six of its 15 hits in the inning and was helped by three Red Devil errors. Travis Benfield led the offense with three RBIs. Luke Johnson added three hits, and Benfield, Josh Foster, Chris Huffman and Matt Upchurch had two hits apiece.
The Cardinals took a 4-0 lead in the first inning off losing pitcher Sam Burnett but added just single runs in the third and sixth innings. Chaffee (6-6), which had 11 hits, moved into a 7-6 lead with two runs in the first, three in the third and single runs in the fifth and sixth.
Anthony Grojean picked up the win in relief.
GIRLS SOCCER
Central 10, Sikeston 0
Central moved back above .500 after the Tigers (8-7) blanked visiting Sikeston.
Heidi Pilsner had four goals to pace the Tigers, while Allie McGinty and Megan Richards both added two goals. Megan Freeze and Chelsey Oliver had one goal apiece.
Pilsner, McGinty, Richards, Jennifer Morris and Kate Miller all recorded assists. Morris and Julie Underwood shared the shutout in goal.
Central's JV romped 6-0.
Jackson 11, Farmington 1
Molly Hartmann had four goals as Jackson won on the road.
Whitney Dietl and Elizabeth Nussbaum both scored two goals while K.T. Biri, Courtney Urhahn and Emily Curtis added one apiece. Urhahn and Curtis each recorded two assists, followed by Dietl, Biri and Abby Weinrich with one apiece.
Jackson's JV won 5-0.
TRACK & FIELD
ND splits dual meet
Notre Dame's girls set two school records and matched another as Sikeston and host Notre Dame split a dual meet.
Notre Dame's 1,600 (4:28.32) and 400 (53.76) meter relay teams established school records as the Bulldogs' girls defeated Sikeston. Amber Karnes, Emily Bira, Laura Weissmueller and Erin Pfau made up the 400 relay team. Karnes, Weissmueller, Katie Daniel and Ashley Millham were on the 1,600 relay team.
Millham and Sara Lange matched the school record in the high jump (4-8). Other winners were Karnes (400 dash), Bira (100 and 200 dash), Lange (high jump), Kasie Essner (1,600 and 3,200 run) and Millham (800 run).
Notre Dame's boys lost but welcomed back sprinter Adam Prasanphanich for his first meet. Prasanphanich won the 100 (11.16), right in front of teammate Tyler Cuba (11.20). Cuba won the 200 (23.67), Bryce Willen won the pole vault (11-6) and Josh Lester won the 3,200 (11:29.71).
Perryville boys win title
Perryville's boys won their second consecutive major meet as they captured the 14-team Ste. Genevieve Invitational with 137 points. Jackson was second with 73 points.
Chris Porter highlighted the victory for the Pirates by setting a meet record in the triple jump with a distance of 45 feet 9 1/2 inches.
Kyle Dobbelare was a double individual winner for Perryville by claiming the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Also victorious for the Pirates were Kevin Bohnert in the 100, Sam Zahner in the discus and the 400 and 800 relay teams that featured Bohnert.
Stuart McIntosh (pole vault) and Brad Crader (shot put) were Jackson's first-place finishers. James Fortner took second in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and high jump.
The girls portion of the meet will be Thursday.
SOFTBALL
Leopold 14, Advance 13
Leopold remained undefeated with a wild victory on the road.
The Wildcats (9-0) had nine hits while the Hornets (7-3) had eight, but each team committed six errors.
Tasha Thele went 4-for-4 to pace Leopold. Angela Broshuis had three hits for Advance. Mary Beth Bohnsack was the winning pitcher.
Trailing 14-7 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Advance scored six runs, but the rally came up just short.
Oak Ridge 12, Meadow Heights 1
The host Blue Jays scored 10 runs in the first three innings to pull away from Meadow Heights in five innings.
Melinda Schoen was 3-for-3 and Katie Hemmann 2-for-2 for Oak Ridge (4-4). Laura Glueck struck out nine in the win.
Chaffee 16, Woodland 4
Kegan Orr went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and three RBIs as Chaffee won on the road.
The Red Devils (5-2) finished with 14 hits. Mallory Kiefer, Whitney Horrell, Lindsey Everett and Brandie Snider added two hits apiece. Horrell pitched all six innings for the win.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Central 130, Poplar Bluff 57
Central's 400 freestyle relay team made the state cut in a home dual meet win.
Sarah Goeke, Hannah Lewis, Cassie Kipper and Katie Maginel won the 400 free relay in 4:44.45. Central won 11 events in all, with eight different individual winners.
Notre Dame takes fourth
Notre Dame finished fourth with 87 points in a four-team meet won by MICDS (215 points) in St. Louis.
Lauren Bader gained Notre Dame's only win when she won the diving event with 124.7 points. Janelle Essner was second in the 200 freestyle and Kristin Enderle was second in the 100 butterfly.-- From staff reports
