The Central baseball team has been competing in the Charger Invitational in Southaven, Miss., for more than a decade without capturing the title.

That changed Saturday, as Central won two more games in the 10-team event, including a 4-3 triumph over Senetobia, Miss., for the championship.

Central went 4-1 in the three-day event, and is now 10-4 on the season.

"I'm very proud of the kids," Central coach Steve Williams said. "This is always an excellent tournament. We've been going there about 11 or 12 years, and this is the first time we've won it.

"A lot of kids contributed. We really swung the bats all weekend and a lot of kids pitched well."

The Tigers' first game Saturday was a 14-12 comeback win over Desoto County Central, Miss., as Central scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Central had 14 hits, with Chris Brotherton and Garrett Stevens both homering. Tyler Propst was the winning pitcher, in relief.

Against Senetobia for the title, the Tigers pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Tigers had seven hits, led by Matt Hester and Eric Ennis with two each.

Brotherton got the victory by retiring two batters in the top of the seventh.

Starter Kory Kitchen allowed five hits and two runs in five innings. Stevens gave up one hit and one run in 1 1/3 innings.

"All three pitched very well," Williams said.
