The Cape Girardeau Central boys basketball team survived its Class 5 District 1 tournament opener Monday night, slipping past host Fox of Arnold 43-41.

Central, the No. 3 seed in the six-team event, improved to 12-14. Fox, seeded last, ends its season at 4-21.

The Tigers led for most of the first half but fell behind 22-19 at the intermission.

Fox scored the first six points of the second half to go ahead 28-19, but the Tigers rallied for a 31-30 advantage after three quarters.

Things went back and forth for most of the final period and the squads found themselves tied 39-39 with about a minute left.

Central's George Hamilton, after blocking a shot, was fouled at the other end and made one of two free throws with 57 seconds left to put the Tigers up 40-39.

The Tigers' Tyler Terry then got a steal and layup with 26 seconds left for a 42-39 lead.

After Hamilton blocked a 3-point attempt, Central's Chase Johnson made one of two free throws with nine seconds remaining to make it 43-39.

Fox scored with four seconds to play, but the Tigers ran out the clock.

Central advances to play second-seeded Hillsboro at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals.

In Wednesday's other semifinal, at 6 p.m., top-seeded Jackson faces No. 4 Poplar Bluff, which beat No. 5 Seckman 80-61 Monday night.

GIRLS BASKETBALLPerryville 47, Ste. Genevieve 45

Fourth-seeded Perryville rallied to beat fifth-seeded Ste. Genevieve in the first round of the Class 4 District 1 tournament at Sikeston.

Perryville trailed 37-28 going into the fourth quarter but outscored the Dragons 19-8 in the final frame.

Kendra Schilli led the Pirates (16-9) with 20 points.

The Pirates will play top-seeded Fredericktown at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals. The other semifinal, at 7:30 p.m., features No. 2 Notre Dame against No. 3 Dexter.
