Toby Carrig, sports editor of the Southeast Missourian since January 2004, is assuming additional duties for oversight of semoball.com, a Web site for Southeast Missouri sports launched in 2006. The change is effective immediately.
Carrig will direct sports content for both the Southeast Missourian and its affiliated Web sites. An assistant sports editor is being sought to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Southeast Missourian sports pages.
Mike Mitchell, who coordinated the start-up of semoball.com, is pursuing a new opportunity in Chattanooga, Tenn. He will continue as a blog contributor to semoball.com.
Semoball.com was started in September 2006 as an online destination for sports news throughout Southeast Missouri. The site combines coverage from the Southeast Missourian, Sikeston Standard Democrat, Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Dexter Daily Statesman and Daily Dunklin Democrat in Kennett.
In addition to blogs, semoball features video and photo galleries from sports events in Southeast Missouri. Its coverage of the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament last month included live brackets, game stories updated throughout each day and video and photo highlights. The coverage resulted in more than 1,500 unique visitors daily during the tournament.
Carrig's goals for semoball.com includes creating unique content, breaking news and short video features. In addition, the site will partner with MaxPrep to provide game and player statistics for all sports in Southeast Missouri. The site already partners with SportsDirect to provide real-time pro and college sports statistics.
