Cards' errors, May's resurgance clears path for Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Darrell May earned his first win since last September in his 14th start of the season, and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to five games with a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals on Friday night.

May (1-4) had gone 16 starts and 19 appearances without a win since beating the Chicago White Sox 9-6 Sept. 11.

He went seven innings against the Cardinals, giving up two runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Mike MacDougal pitched the ninth for his 20th save in 25 chances.

The Royals broke a 2-all tie with three runs, all unearned, in the seventh inning off starter Garrett Stephenson (4-7).

Mike DeFelice's bases-loaded, one-out groundball scored Raul Ibanez with the go-ahead run, and two more runs scored when rookie second baseman Bo Hart misplayed Desi Relaford's pinch-hit grounder.

St. Louis committed three errors, tying its season high.

Stephenson pitched seven innings, giving up five runs -- two earned -- on only three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead on solo homers by Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen in the top of the fourth, but Kansas City tied it at 2 in the bottom of the inning when Carlos Beltran doubled and scored on Ken Harvey's ground ball to short.

Beltran added an RBI triple in the eighth for a 6-3 lead.

Rolen went 3-for-4 for St. Louis, which lost despite outhitting Kansas City 7-4.

Aaron Guiel put the Royals up 1-0 in the first, doubling and scoring on Beltran's groundout, and also made several standout plays in right field.

In the second inning, he made a running grab of Edgar Renteria's sinking line drive and doubled Rolen off first. In the fifth, his diving, back-to-the-plate catch robbed Hart of a hit.

Hart, who came in with six multihit showings in just seven major league games, finished 0-for-4. Albert Pujols, the majors' top hitter, was 1-for-4 with an RBI single that cut Kansas City's lead to 5-3 in the eighth.

Cardinals outfielder J.D. Drew left after three innings with a sore left ankle.

He was replaced in right field by Eduardo Perez, who moved over from left field. Orlando Palmeiro came in to play left field and took Drew's spot in the batting order.

Cardinals call up Journell, send down Robinson

The Cardinals recalled right-hander Jimmy Journell from Triple-A Memphis on Friday, adding a pitcher for their interleague series with the Royals.

Journell has made 25 appearances for Memphis this season, going 1-5 as a starter before moving to the bullpen. He is 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA in relief.

"This is his chance to see what it's all about at this level," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said.

To make room on their roster, the Cardinals optioned outfielder Kerry Robinson to Memphis. In 47 games this season, Robinson, a former Southeast Missouri State University star, was batting .192 with six runs and three RBIs.

Kansas City leads the interleague series with St. Louis 13-12.

Edmonds hit his 22nd homer on his 33rd birthday.

Harvey reached twice on errors Friday night. Renteria booted Harvey's RBI grounder in the fourth inning, and Perez dropped his fly ball to right in the seventh.
