Cards blow late lead, recover in 10 innings

VIERA, Fla. -- General manager Jim Bowden was angry at the Washington Nationals following their 7-4, 10-inning loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Center fielder Marlon Byrd's 10th-inning error allowed the tiebreaking run to score, and the Nationals dropped to 1-6 in spring training with one tie. On Tuesday, the Nationals were routed by Florida 22-12.

"I have been embarrassed the last two days," Bowden said. "There's going to be major cuts in the next 48 hours. It's time to take it to another level.

"I just don't want to be embarrassed. That's all I ask."

Washington tied the score 4-all in the ninth. After Byrd's error in the 10th, Junior Spivey hit a two-run single.

Chris Carpenter pitched four shutout innings, and St. Louis led 4-0 on a three-run homer by Brian Daubach in the first and a solo shot by Chris Duncan in the eighth.

John Webb, Tyler Johnson and Alan Benes combined for four shutout innings in relief of Carpenter.

Tyrell Godwin hit a two-run double in the ninth and Byrd had a two-run single off Carmen Cali, who was the winner. David Maust was the loser.

Nationals starter Kyle Denney allowed three runs and three hits in four innings.
