David Mirly is hard at work just trying to establish his team after he was hired as Woodland's third different girls basketball coach in the last three years. But he couldn't be more excited about the task.

"Things are going good so far," said Mirly, who coached at Chaffee last year. "I'm really excited about being at a new school."

Three different coaches in the last three years has left Woodland with a different identity each year, and it has put a strain on players, who must learn a new system again.

"The kids have been working extremely hard," Mirly said. "It's a lot to put these kids through, but it's a good challenge for them and for me."

If anything can help the players get through that challenge it's Mirly's passion and enthusiasm for the game, something he hopes his team shares.

"I do bring a lot of energy to the game," Mirly said.

Three players who started for Woodland last year are returning this year, although Mirly says there's ample competition for starting spots. The returning starters will compete with 10 other players for a position.

"I'm not one to really throw kids out there. They have to earn it in practice," Mirly said. "We're looking for some new leaders this year."

Chris Holvey, a 6-2 senior, returns as one of the most athletic players on the team. Brandon Cowell and Cody McCraw are other returning starters. Travis Benfield saw significant playing time last season.
