ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals reliever Bill Pulsipher, pitching in the major leagues for the first time since 2001, reinjured his right hamstring on a followthrough Sunday and likely will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.
"I would say the prospects are not good," manager Tony La Russa said.
Pulsipher, a former Mets phenom, was a nonroster invitee to spring training and made the team as a left-handed specialist with a perfect 10 1-3-inning performance despite breaking his right big toe on a line drive and the hamstring injury. He lasted one-third of an inning Sunday, pitching to two hitters.
In three games, he has allowed one run on two hits in 1 2-3 innings for a 5.40 ERA.
"I felt it a little bit the pitch before," Pulsipher said. "I was going to do what I could to keep going. We'll come in tomorrow, get some treatment, and see what happens in the next 24 to 48 hours."
Pulsipher had thought the injury had healed.
"I thought it was a non-issue," he said. "I've been running with the pitchers and didn't feel a thing."
