ST. LOUIS -- Anthony Reyes' first win for the St. Louis Cardinals since the World Series opener will earn him another start.

A day after Reyes ended a streak of 12 straight regular-season losses with a 5-2 victory over fading Milwaukee, the 25-year-old right-hander remained on the active roster.

"He'll pitch next week," manager Tony La Russa said.

When utility man Scott Spiezio was activated Sunday from the 15-day disabled list, the Cardinals designated reliever Brian Falkenborg for assignment.

Reyes' next turn figures to come at the expense of Mike Maroth (0-4 with a 9.20 ERA) or Brad Thompson, who left his start in Saturday's doubleheader with a blister on his right ring finger.

Reyes (1-10) allowed two runs and two hits in six innings. He won for the first time in the regular season since Sept. 3 after tying a franchise record for futility set by Kid Carsey, who began the 1898 season 0-10.

Falkenborg was recalled from Class AAA Memphis on Saturday to help out for a doubleheader, and threw three shutout innings in the first game.

Shannon's wife dies

Judy Shannon, the wife of Cardinals baseball broadcaster Mike Shannon, died Saturday at age 66.

She had been fighting brain cancer for about a year.

Judith Ann and Mike Shannon were married 48 years. Mike Shannon had taken periodic leaves from broadcasting to be with his wife during her illness.

The couple has six children, 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
