Top-seed Wade Russell and third-seed Ben Roeger were the only members of the Cape Central boys tennis team to come away victorious as visiting Carbondale won 7-2 Thursday.

Carbondale won four of the six singles matches and swept all three doubles matches.

The loss dropped Central's meet record to 1-2.

In junior varsity action Carbondale also won 7-5, dropping the Tigers record to 1-1-1. Central JV winners were Mick Metzger (9-8), Ed Roeger (8-5) and Rezwan Ali (8-5) in singles. In doubles, Travis Hyslop and Metzger won 8-5 while Andrew Skinner and Alex Edwards won 8-6.

Cape Central 154, Notre Dame 173

Dane McLaird's 35 paced Cape Central and the Tigers beat Notre Dame Thursday at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Also for Central, Dan Groesbeck shot 39, Bryan Welker 40 and Mike Oslund 40.

Notre Dame's top four were Matt Howard (42), Chris Koeper (43), Dan Buerck (43) and Jonathan LeGrand (45).

Jackson 160, Fredericktown 176

JACKSON -- Jackson beat Fredericktown in a dual meet Thursday at Bent Creek Golf Course.

Travis Reiminger led Jackson with a 38. John Litzelfelner shot 40 and Gabe Estes and Tyler Luebbers both shot 41.

Jackson improved to 5-0.

Baseball

Perryville 5, Herculaneum 1

PERRYVILLE -- Single runs in the first and second innings and three in the fifth propelled Perryville to a win over visiting Herculaneum Thursday.

Matt Meyr earned the complete-game win. He allowed six hits while striking out eight and walking three.

Joe Heuring and Jason Hecht both had two hits for the Pirates.

Perryville will travel to Crystal City Monday.

Bell City 8, Advance 2

BELL CITY -- Bell City's Cubs moved to 4-0 and 2-0 in the SCAA with a win over Advance Thursday.

Nate Wills earned the win. He went all seven innings, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out four and walking three.

Offensively for the Cubs, Justin Stephens went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Matt Knoderer went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Softball

Advance 19, Bell City 0

BELL CITY -- Ten hits by Advance and numerous walks by Bell City allowed the Lady Hornets to pick up an easy four-inning win on the road Thursday and improve to 2-0.

Cassandra Williams (2-0) earned the win. She allowed one hit in three innings of work while striking out four and walking three.

Stacy O'Hare had two hits and three RBIs, Amanda Bond had two hits and Erin Jenkins added a triple.

Advance will host Leopold on Monday.

Girls soccer

Cape Central 8, Hillsboro 0

Cape Central improved to 5-0 on the season by spoiling the debut of the Hillsboro soccer program.

Lorie Bittle, Abby Harris and Mindy Hoffman all scored first-half goals as Central rolled out to a 3-0 lead by halftime. Katie Cozby assisted on Harris' goal while Emilee Atchley set up Hoffman's tally.

Atchley upped the lead to 4-0 just 48 seconds into the second half. Corie Nunnally, Cozby and Harris followed with goals for a 7-0 lead. Nunnally capped the scoring with her second goal of the half. Jennifer Daume, Amy Harris and Spring DeCramer picked up assists.

Central's JV (1-0-1) won 5-0 with Mindy Hoffman, Atchley, Daume, Nunnally and DeCramer scoring the goals.

Central returns to action Saturday at Ursaline Academy.

Poplar Bluff 2, Notre Dame 0

POPLAR BLUFF -- Playing in their third game in as many days, the Lady Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 at halftime and never recovered in a loss to Poplar Bluff.

The loss was the second in a row for the Lady Bulldogs, dropping their record to 2-3-1.

"Poplar Bluff had quite a bit of team speed and we were pretty fatigued coming in," Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley said. "It could have been a lot worse, but we came back on them in the second half."

Track

Jackson boys, girls win

SIKESTON -- Jackson swept a dual meet on the road against Sikeston Thursday.

The boys won 93-45 and the girls 77-39.

Twelve different Indians won individual events.

For the girls, Kasie Jones won both the long jump and the triple jump and Becky King took the 300 hurdles and the high jump.

Jackson's boys and girls will travel to Murphysboro, Ill., on Saturday.

Charleston, Dexter win Chaffee meets

CHAFFEE -- Charleston ran away with the boys meet with 196 points Thursday in the Chaffee Invitational. Following the Blue Jays were Dexter (114), Chaffee (96), East Prairie (60), Scott City (26) and Oran (20).

Darren McIntosh won the 800 for Chaffee and Phillip Groves won the discus.

Dexter won the girls meet with 184 points as Charleston finished second with 158. Chaffee took third (82), Scott City fourth (57), East Prairie fifth (19) and Oran sixth (5).

Chaffee's Renee Vandeven won both the 400 and 800 races. Chaffee's Athena Hampton also turned in a first in the 3,200 and Scott City's Amy O'Brien won the high jump.
