Playing its first game in a week, the Cape Senior Babe Ruth baseball team came out swinging Thursday night at Capaha Park, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding five more in the fifth en route to an 11-3 victory over the visiting Portageville Americans.

"Hitting can be contagious," Cape coach Alan Wengert said. "We had some kids go up there and swing the bat with confidence, and it caught on."

First baseman Garret Stevens, who was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, led the charge offensively. Nathan Kolda also added three hits to go along with a walk. Cape tallied nine hits overall.

Anthony Wulfers, who pitched five innings and allowed only one run on two hits, recorded the win for Cape. Wulfers, who struck out three batters, was replaced in the top of the sixth by Adam Thomas, who allowed a run in each of the final two frames.

Cape improved its record to 4-7.

Shortly after the game, a storm moved into the area and forced the cancellation of the second contest.
