Cape Legion splits doubleheader at Oakville

The Cape Girardeau Ford and Sons American Legion team split a doubleheader Saturday with host Oakville, losing the opener 3-1 and winning the nightcap 6-1.

Cape (5-5) outhit its St. Louis County opponent 6-5 in the first game, but four errors proved costly.

Cory Huskey pitched all six innings and took the loss, allowing five hits and just one earned run. He struck out three and walked two.

Trevor Irwin had two hits for Cape, while Scott Brueckner drove in the lone run.

Cape again had four errors in the second game but was able to overcome them. Cape had nine hits to seven for Oakville.

Kendal Deason pitched the first five innings for the win, allowing seven hits and an unearned run. Michael Taylor finished up with two hitless innings.

Brueckner, Zac Hudson and Steve Miinch each had two hits for Cape. Hudson scored twice, while Brueckner and Miinch each had a triple.

Cape resumes District 14 play today with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Notre Dame Regional High School against host Scott County.

* Saturday's game between the Plaza Tire Capahas and St. Joseph (Mo.) Saints at Capaha Field was canceled due to wet grounds.

Weather permitting, the Capahas and Saints will square off at 1 p.m. today in the finale of a scheduled two-game series. The Capahas will also play their Cape Girardeau rivals, the Riverdogs, at 5:30 p.m. today.

Late Friday Jackson Sr. Babe Ruth 9, Arcadia Valley 6

Jackson's Sr. Babe Ruth team ran its record to 12-3 by beating Arcadia Valley.

Travis Niswonger, Tommy Wood and Sam Sander each had two hits for Jackson. Trevor Thompson added a two-run triple.

Sam Sander improved his pitching record to 3-1 by working the first five innings, allowing two earned runs. Brandon Stearns picked up his first save by pitching the final four innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out eight.

Jackson returns to action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home doubleheader against Cape Girardeau.
