The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team had little trouble closing out the regular season on a positive note Wednesday night.

Visiting De Soto came to Capaha Field with a 1-24 record -- and Cape added to the squad's misery by handily sweeping a non-district doubleheader12-1 and 9-4.

Ford & Sons improved to 26-18 and the team will actually tack on two more wins before next week's District 14 Tournament in Charleston. Cape will get those extra victories via forfeit because Jackson, an opponent originally scheduled for Friday, has folded its squad.

In Wednesday's first game, which ended after the top of the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule, Cape banged out 13 hits.

Josh McIntosh led the way by going 3-for-3 and he drove in three runs. Tommy Wencewicz and Justin Welker both added two hits while Wencewicz, Welker, Mark Fisher and Scott Reinagel all delivered two RBIs.

Rob Carr pitched all five innings, allowing five hits and an unearned run. He struck out five and walked three.

The nightcap was a bit more competitive, but Cape was still never seriously challenged.

This time Ford & Sons had 11 hits, including three home runs. Wes Steele and Garrett Broshuis belted balls out of spacious Capaha Field while Jay Pierce earned an inside-the-park homer.

McIntosh had two more hits, giving him five on the night. Steele had two hits and two RBIs while Dusty Barrows added two hits.

Joe Hamilton was the winning hurler. In five innings, he allowed three hits and one run. Daniel Turner allowed three runs (one earned) and one hit in one inning while Fisher pitched one perfect frame.
