POPLAR BLUFF -- The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team climbed back to the .500 mark overall Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over host Poplar Bluff.

Cape won the rain-shortened game that went just five innings. A scheduled second contest was totally rained out.

Ford & Sons is now 12-12 overall and 5-6 in District 14 play.

Mark Ostendorf was the winning pitcher. He allowed just one hit and no earned runs while striking out four and walking none.

Cape had five hits, a double by Tommy Wencewicz and singles by Mike Sullivan, Wes Steele, Garrett Broshuis and Richard Harrison.

Ford & Sons broke on top with two runs in the third inning. Broshuis led off with a single and was scarified to second by Nathan Essner. Harrison's single sent Broshuis to third. Wencewicz then delivered an RBI double and Sullivan 1B followed with an RBI single.

After Poplar Bluff scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third, Cape got the game's final run with an unearned tally in the fourth. Broshuis went all the way to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

Cape is scheduled to host District 14 power Dunklin County in a 5 p.m. doubleheader today at Capaha Field.

SENATH -- The Cape Girardeau Wood & Huston Bank Junior American Legion baseball team dropped a District 14 doubleheader to host Dunklin County Sunday.

Cape lost the opener 5-4 in eight innings, then dropped the nightcap 5-2 a game shortened to five innings by rain.

Cape is now 18-10 overall and 10-6 in District 14 play. Dunklin County took over the district lead at 11-5.

Andrew DePeder had three of Cape's eight hits in the opener. Rob Carr suffered the loss in relief.

Tim Wencewicz had three of Cape's five hits in the nightcap. Jay Pierce was the losing hurler.

Chaffee Jr. Legion falls

CHAFFEE -- Chaffee's Junior American Legion team suffered a 9-7, nine-inning loss to visiting Anheuser-Busch from St. Louis Sunday. A scheduled second game was rained out.

Chaffee (16-8) had 12 hits but committed seven errors.

John O'Rourke had three hits, including a home run and two doubles. Perry Rice also had three hits while Todd Friend and Matt Stroup added two each.

Lance Dohogne was the losing pitcher in relief.
