Cape Girardeau American Legion junior team coach Tim Wulfers estimates it has been close to a decade since Cape last won a zone tournament.
It had been about that long since Cape had won a District 14 tournament, but that drought ended on Sunday with a 3-2 victory against Jackson in the district championship game.
Now Cape (25-11) will try to earn a spot in the state tournament as it starts play in the Zone 4 Tournament today at West City Park in Festus, Mo. The three other teams joining Cape in the double elimination tournament are host Festus, Anheuser-Busch and Manchester.
Up first for Cape will be Festus tonight at 8. Anheuser-Busch plays Manchester at 5:30 p.m. today in the opening game.
"This is one heck of a group of kids," Wulfers said of his team. "Good hitters, good fielders --hopefully, that will be enough to take us there."
