The Cape Girardeau American Legion baseball team ended its nine-game losing streak Thursday night by rallying in the ninth inning to defeat host Farmington 9-5 in a nondistrict game.
Ford & Sons scored seven runs in the ninth to rally from a 4-2 deficit. After Scott Brueckner drove in two runs with a basehit to tie the game, Sean Bard delivered a three-run home run to put Cape ahead.
Cory Huskey pitched a complete game in the victory, allowing six hits and five walks over nine innings. He struck out one and allowed three earned runs among the five scored.
Cape (11-20) had 13 hits and committed three errors, while Farmington committed five errors.
Brueckner and Bard finished 2-for-5, as did Blake Slattery, who had a double among his hits. Brueckner finished with two RBIs, and Bard had three. Trevor Irwin was 3-for-4 with a double.
Cape Girardeau returns to District 14 action Friday with a 6 p.m. doubleheader at Sikeston.
The top-seeded Cape Girardeau American Legion junior team defeated Twin Rivers 10-2 on Thursday to advance to Saturday's 1 p.m. winners bracket final in the District 14 tournament.
Justin Myers pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing two unearned runs on five hits. He struck out six.
Cape Girardeau (23-11) was led offensively by Abe Dirnberger, who had two hits; and Brooks Osburn, who had a two-run single.
Cape plays Sikeston, a winner against host Scott County Post 369 (Medicap) on Thursday night.
Losers bracket games are set for this evening at Chaffee.
The Cape Girardeau Tigers 12-and-under baseball team was eliminated from the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Wednesday.
The Tigers, after finishing 4-3 in pool play, had won their elimination bracket opener 5-4 against the Saline, Mich., Blue Jays. Brett Thomas was the winning pitcher, while Jonathon Lynch and Austin Davis each hit a home run.
The Tigers lost 7-5 against the Lakeland, Fla., Renegades in a game delayed more than 2 hours by rain. Andrew Williams and Lynch each hit a home run for the Tigers.
The team on Thursday joined the rest of the field in being inducted into the AYB Hall of Fame. Each player received a tournament ring. A fireworks display preceded the tournament championship.
The Tigers had lost 11-10 to the Virginia Knights in Wednesday's final pool play game. Thomas homered in the game.
