Cape Girardeau's Best Mortgage Junior American Legion baseball team is having a sensational season but manager Matt Welker knows his squad will have its work cut out for it this weekend.

Welker looks for some rugged competition when his squad hosts an eight-team tournament today, Saturday and Sunday. Games will be played at Central and Notre Dame high schools. The tourney will primarily consist of players 15 and 16 years old.

"This is probably going to be some of the best competition we've seen all year," said Welker, whose team is off to an 18-1 start. "I think just about every team in this tournament is going to be good."

Perryville is the only other local squad in the tourney. Other Missouri teams entered are Festus, Kirkwood, Anheuser-Busch and Rock Memorial, with the latter three all from the St. Louis area. Rounding out the field are Paducah, Ky., and Paris, Tenn.

The tournament consists of two four-team divisions. Each team will play three games within its division and records will determine final-round pairings.

Cape, Perryville, Kirkwood and Anheuser-Busch are in the National Division while Festus, Rock Memorial, Paducah and Paris comprise the American Division.

The championship game will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Scott City tourney

The Scott City Senior Babe Ruth baseball squad will also host a six-team tournament this weekend, with action set for Saturday and Sunday.

Pool A consists of Scott City, the Cape Girardeau Yankees and Dexter while Pool B is comprised of the Cape Girardeau White Sox, Chaffee and Mayfield, Ky.

"Mayfield is real tough and the Cape Yankees have been playing real well," said Scott City coach Talmas McAlister. "We should have a really good tournament."

Six games will be played Saturday, three in each pool, with four of the games in Scott City and two in Chaffee.

The championship game will be 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
