KENNETT, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau Wood & Huston Bank and Jackson will square off here today for the championship of the District 14 Junior American Legion baseball tournament.

Jackson, the lone undefeated squad in the tourney, beat Chaffee 4-2 Sunday in the winner's bracket final.

Cape won a pair of elimination games, downing Sikeston 9-5 and Chaffee 13-3 in five innings in the loser's bracket final.

Today's finals are set for 5:30 p.m. If Cape wins, a second game would be played. The district winner will host the Zone 4 Tournament beginning Thursday.

Tim Wencewicz had a huge game during Cape's win over Chaffee. He pitched all five innings, allowing six hits while striking out two and walking none. Offensively, he homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs.

Seth Hudson also doubled twice while Dustin Klipfel added two of Cape's 10 hits.

During Cape's victory over Sikeston, winner Jason Gibson hurled the first four innings, allowing four hits and one run. Jordan Comer earned a save, allowing four hits and four runs in the final three innings.

Hudson and Adam Ralls each had two of Cape's seven hits. Hudson, Mitch Craft and Derek Ruth all added two RBIs.

Cape Legion sweeps Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team swept its second straight District 14 doubleheader by taking two from host Poplar Bluff Sunday.

Cape prevailed 8-5 in the opener and 7-6 in the nightcap to improve its overall record to 20-16 and its district mark to 11-9.

In the first game, Jay Pierce pitched all seven innings. He scattered 10 hits while striking out four and walking three.

Cape had 11 first-game hits, led by Mark Fisher with three. Tommy Wencewicz, Josh McIntosh and Wes Steele all added two.

Justin Welker was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. In 6 2/3 innings, he allowed six hits while fanning six and walking one. John Snider recorded the final out to earn a save.

Ford & Sons had 15 second-game hits, led by Zac Fidler with four. Steele, Rob Carr and T.J. Erlacker all added two.

Cape will host Dunklin County today in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.

NBC Mid-South Regional

As expected, St. Louis O.B. Clark moved into the winner's bracket final of the eight-team, two-weekend event being played at Capaha Field.

O.B. Clark defeated Fulton 5-2 Sunday in a second-round winner's bracket game. The St. Louis squad will meet the host McDowell Capahas at 8 p.m. Friday.

In elimination games Sunday, Goreville (Ill.) beat Murphysboro (Ill.) 6-0; Fairview Heights (Ill.) downed Pine Bluff (Ark.) 8-0; and Fulton edged Fairview Heights 11-10.

Also, the Capahas will face the Cape Riverdogs at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Capaha Field.

Cape Sr. Babe Ruth rolls

The Cape Sr. Babe Ruth Yankees swept a doubleheader from Dexter Sunday, romping 8-3 and 10-4 at Notre Dame High School.

Cape is now 14-9 overall and 12-5 in the Dexter Sr. Babe Ruth League.

Scott Wittenborn pitched all seven innings of the opener. James Powell, Ryan Livingston and Matt Pobst all had two hits. Powell belted his fifth home run of the season and had three RBIs.

Jason Brown hurled all seven innings in the nightcap. Chris Barrows had three hits and five RBIs while Ricky Ogles added two hits.

Saturday, Cape swept Dexter's 16-year-old team 10-1 and 15-10. Powell and Ben Martin were the winning pitchers. Powell homered while Travis Wissman had four hits and Anthony Boren added three hits.
