Cape Girardeau's American Legion team simply has Jackson starter Tyler Beussink's number.
Beussink allowed nine runs in 51 2/3 innings during Jackson's high school season. In two starts against Cape this summer, Beussink has allowed 24 runs, though not all have been earned runs.
In his second start against Cape on Monday night, Beussink was roughed up for 14 runs in 6 1/3 innings as Ford & Sons improved to 2-1 against Jackson (10-8) this summer with a 15-5 eight-inning win at Jackson Legion Field.
"I think we just enjoy hitting against him," Ford & Sons coach Dave Meyr said.
Beussink did not receive much help in the field, as Jackson committed eight errors in all.
"I thought the pitching wasn't bad, but obviously not good enough," Lewis said. "We made some mistakes in the field that really hurt us."
Up 2-1 heading into the top of the third, Ford & Sons used three hits, two walks, a hit batsman and two errors to go up 7-1. Kendal Deason and Steve Miinch each had RBI hits in the inning.
An inning later Cape used a hit, a walk and three errors to score three more runs. Miinch had the only hit in the inning -- an RBI triple -- as Cape increased its lead to 10-1.
Ford & Sons pushed its lead to 14-2 after a four-hit, four-run sixth. Miinch collected his third hit and third RBI in the inning. Zac Hudson and Ty Craft also drove in runs.
Jackson appeared to be headed to a seven-inning loss when Brandon Gendron launched a two-run home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap to 14-5.
Craft drove home another run in the eighth to help Ford & Sons put the game away.
"It was a big win. I enjoyed it," Meyr said. "We had a good pitching performance and hit the ball well."
Cory Huskey threw a complete game for Ford and Sons. Huskey allowed five runs on 11 hits.
"The big key was our pitcher got ahead in the counts, then we scored some runs for him and he relaxed," Meyr said.
Miinch and Craft led Cape with three hits apiece. Hudson and Trevor Irwin had two hits apiece. The win evened Cape's record at 8-8.
"Once we get going and get our confidence up, I think we'll be OK," Meyr said.
Gendron led Jackson with three hits, and Derrick Biri and Rex Meyr had two hits apiece. Jackson has now lost three in a row as it heads to Sikeston tonight for a district doubleheader.
"I think it's just one of those you go through, and as a team you have to battle through," Lewis said.
