Errors got the best of the Cape Girardeau American Legion baseball team, which allowed seven unanswered runs in an 8-5 loss to Dothan, Ala., on Wednesday night at Capaha Field.

Cape Girardeau built a 5-1 lead after two innings and still led 5-2 when starting pitcher Anthony Wulfers departed the game after five innings.

But Dothan came up with five runs on three hits and five walks against losing pitcher Blake Essner in 2 1/3 innings.

Each team committed four errors.

"Errors hurt us," Ford & Sons coach David Meyr said, "and then we stopped hitting after the second inning. We scored five runs in the first two innings, and then they just chipped away at us."

Dothan outhit Cape 10-5 in the game.

Wulfers allowed five hits in five innings. Jeremy Brinkmeyer, who came on in relief of Essner, allowed Dothan's final run, and Michael Taylor finished out the game for Ford & Sons.

Kendal Deason had two hits for Cape Girardeau, and Trevor Irwin added two RBIs.

Ford & Sons, who has lost nine straight games, fell to 10-20 and will play a single game at Farmington today.
