SOUTH HAVEN, Miss. -- Cape Central scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to knock off South Haven, the third ranked team in Mississippi, 2-1 Thursday in its opening game of the De Soto Time Today Classic.
Cape Central (5-3) had only two hits, but used the five-hit pitching of Jay Pierce and errorless defense to pull out the win.
The game entered the seventh inning scoreless, but Central pushed across two runs. Dusty Barrows provided the game's first run on a sacrifice fly and John Snider added a two-out RBI single.
South Haven (15-4) scored its only run off Pierce in the bottom of the seventh, but threatened for more. Pierce, who struck out four and walked five in 6 2/3 innings, gave way to Snider with two outs and runners on first and third. Snider induced a pop-up to end the game.
Central continues round-robin action today.
SCOTT CITY -- Scott City used timely hitting and took advantage of some Oran errors and walks as the Rams knocked off the Eagles 8-6 Thursday in high school baseball action.
Bill Posey was the winning pitcher for Scott City (3-2). He threw four innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Charlie Lindberg got the save. In three innings, he allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out one.
Scott City had just five hits on the day, but got hits in key situations including a pair of RBI doubles by Wade Powers.
"They're well coached and they're a perennial powerhouse in 1A," said Scott City coach Mike Umfleet. "They've owned us the last couple of years. It was a great win for us. We didn't play well against Perryville and lost 21-7 and I was wondering how we'd approach today's game. It was good to see how well we played."
Phillip Seyer suffered the loss for Oran (4-1) in four innings.
Advance 16, Bloomfield 5
ADVANCE -- The Hornets scored the game's first 12 runs as they improved to 7-0 on the season with a five-inning victory.
Tyler Phelps enacted the 10-run rule with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.
Winning pitcher Adam Rainey allowed just one hit over the first four innings, striking out nine and walking one.
Rainey and Garrett Broshuis each had two hits in the Hornets' 10-hit attack.
Puxico 5, Leopold 4
LEOPOLD -- Leopold trailed 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh and managed to rally before falling just short to Puxico.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the seventh and left runners at second and third base.
For Leopold, Ashton James went 3-for-4 with a double and Scott Vangennip went 2-for-4 with a double.
Josh Van de Ven, a freshman making his first varsity start, got off to a rocky start but ended well. He went seven innings and struck out seven while walking five.
Derek Benford was the winning pitcher for Puxico.
Kelly 12, Charleston 6
BENTON -- After getting off to a rocky start this season, Kelly picked up its third straight win.
Garrett Stricker got the win for Kelly (3-4), going 6 1/3 innings. He allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits and four walks while striking out four.
Justin Simpher had a huge day offensively for the Hawks. He went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Jess Pattengill went 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Brad Kolwyck went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Charleston got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but Kelly used a five-run third to take control of the game. Pattengill provided a two-run single then Simpher's homer put Kelly on top.
Kelly had 10 hits in all.
"We're doing a lot better and getting a lot of confidence," said Kelly coach Mike Scott. "When we put things together, we'll be able to compete in districts. But we're showing some signs that we're coming around."
Chaffee 26, Scott County Central 0
CHAFFEE -- The Red Devils pushed across 15 runs in the first inning as they breezed to a five-inning victory.
Winning pitcher Rusty Duncan held Scott Central hitless through four innings before giving way to Same Burnett, who allowed two hits in the final inning.
Chaffee (7-3, 4-0) collected 19 hits on the day. Travis Hanback led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while Duncan, Burnett, Ryan Goetz, Shawn Powderly, Brent Thomason and Chase Eskew all had two hits. Powderly and Eskew both finished with four RBIs.
