For the first time in seven years, Cape Central High School will be holding the SEMO Conference wrestling tournament today.

While Tigers coach Josh Crowell said the event is not quite as enormous as the 16-team Tiger Classic which was held in December, it will have steeper competition.

Among the schools which will participate in the 11-team SEMO Conference Tournament are Cape Central, Dexter, Farmington, Jackson, New Madrid County Central, North County, Park Hills Central, Poplar Bluff, Potosi, Sikeston and Ste. Genevieve.

There will be eight returning state placers in the tournament and eight returning conference champions.

Farmington will be favored to win it, but Jackson and Ste. Genevieve should be close behind, Crowell said.

"It could come down to the heavyweight match in the end," said Crowell. "You never know what could happen."

From Jackson, Rick Feiner took second last year at 103, Brett Stroud took second at 112, Adam Wachter took second at 125 and Cyle Huck took second at 130. Cape Central's Josh Goodrich took third at 140 and O.J. Turner took third at 171.

Wrestling will start at 11 a.m. with the championships to start around 6 p.m.
