"It was really a team effort all year."ZalmaClass 1A, District 2ZALMA -- Top-seeded Bernie won yet another district volleyball championship Tuesday night knocking off fifth-seeded Oran and then third-seeded Zalma.

Bernie defeated Zalma 15-11 and 15-4 in the championship game.

Zalma suffered the loss despite getting four kills, two blocks and five service points from Amber Buehler, eight kills from Carrie Pixley and four kills and three blocks from Erica Campbell.

Bernie advanced to the final by knocking off No. 5 Oran 15-8 and 15-1.

Zalma (12-15) beat No. 2 seed Bell City 15-13, 1-15 and 15-12.

In that match, Pixley had 17 kills, while Buehler added 12 kills and five blocks. Selena Slaughter served up 31 assists for the Lady Bulldogs and had 48 total in just two matches Tuesday night."I'm real proud of the way the girls played tonight," said Zalma coach Shannon Garner. "They fought until the end."Bernie will play a sectional game at Poplar Bluff on Saturday.

Class 2A, District 2BLOOMFIELD -- Top-seeded Scott City will face No. 2 seed Bloomfield for the district championship tonight at 6.

In Monday nights semifinal action, Scott City disposed of fifth-seeded Twin Rivers 17-14, 15-9. Mindy Miller and Whitney Baer each finished with six kills for the Lady Rams.

Bloomfield advanced with a three-set victory over third-seeded Chaffee.

Class 1A, District 4STE. GENEVIEVE -- Jessica Lakenan led fourth-seeded St. Vincent with 11 kills and two blocks as the Squaws improved to 9-17-2 with a 15-13-15-5 victory over fifth-seeded Oak Ridge.

Valerie Klaus scored nine points and Casey Krin had eight service points and 12 assists.

St. Vincent will face top-seeded Leopold in the semifinals tonight at 5. The championship game will be held at 7:30.

SOCCERNotre Dame 1, Poplar Bluff 0Notre Dame improved its season record to 18-4-1 with a shutout victory over the Mules.

Adam Obermiller accounted for the lone goal when he deposited a pass from Scott Wittenborn 13 minutes into the contest.

Michael Gosche recorded the shutout in goal."When you shut a team out there's usually more than just the goalie," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn. "Our defense has been playing very well."In the JV game, Notre Dame also won by a 1-0 score.

Tyler Cuba scored a first-half goal on an assist from Jeff Brosey to push Notre Dame's junior varsity record to 9-5-4 this season.

Paul Unterreiner recorded the shutout in goal.

Notre Dame returns to action today at home against Cape Central. Both the varsity and JV games will begin at 4 p.m.
