In a cleanly played game, Cape Central broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh on visiting Mehlville's lone error for a 1-0 victory in high school softball action Monday.

Cassie Gross limited Mehlville to four hits in pitching the shutout. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

"It was a nice one to come out on top," said Cape Central coach Amy Blattel, who saw her team improve to 9-11. "It was a real good game."

Gross pitched out of a first-and-third, one-out jam in the top of the seventh with a well-timed strikeout and a nice catch in the outfield by Ashley Foutch.

In Cape Central's seventh, Katie Dougherty led off with a double and gave way to pinch-runner Sarah Miinch. Amy Girod grounded out to advance Miinch to third and Trish Klipfel reached on a fielder's choice. Klipfel then stole second with the throw sailing into centerfield to score Miinch.

Dionna Webb had two hits in Central's six-hit attack.

Central won the JV game 11-4 with Holly Schnurbusch notching the win.

Notre Dame 10, Sikeston 0

SIKESTON -- Notre Dame posted a pair of five-run innings en route to a five-inning victory over Sikeston.

Notre Dame (8-11) scored five runs in the first and five more in the fourth.

Ramona Blankenship fired a one-hitter for the win. She struck out nine and walked one.

Stacey Schwartz had two doubles and two RBIs for Notre Dame, which had seven hits. Bonnie Essner added a triple and Blankenship had a double.

Notre Dame also won the JV contest 10-0.

St. Vincent 7, Park Hills 2

PARK HILLS - Jessica Kirn took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning before giving up a leadoff hit as the Squaws rolled to victory.

Kirn finished with a one-hitter, issuing two walks and striking out six.

St. Vincent (3-12) collected nine hits. Jean Brown, Kindle Ernst and Monica Weith all had two hits.

Trailing 1-0 after the first, St. Vincent scored seven unanswered runs by plating runners in five of the six remaining innings.

Perryville 19, DeSoto 9

PERRYVILLE -- Mercy was declared as the "Ten-run rule" was invoked by Perryville after five innings.

DeSoto had little chance of victory after going down 11-0 after two innings

Amanda Nuyt was the leading hitter for Perryville by getting four hits with one triple and two RBIs.

Amanda Roth was the winning pitcher by giving up seven hits, three walks and four earned runs.

Perryville improved its record to 19-9.

VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame 15-7-15

Park Hills 8-15-8

PARK HILLS -- Notre Dame defeated perennial power Park Hills Central Monday in three sets.

Katie Canfield led the way with 19 assists and 13 service points.

Jennifer VanGennip led Notre Dame in the kill department with nine, followed by Michelle Hency, eight, Lynne Obermiller, five, and Amber Elfrink, five.

Carrie Halter paced Notre Dame with 15 service points.

Notre Dame won the JV match 15-7, 16-14.

Zalma 15-15

Oran 2-7

ORAN -- Zalma climbed over the .500 mark with a convincing sweep of its host.

Carrie Pixley paced Zalma (6-5) with eight kills and six service points. Amber Buehler added five kills and Jennifer Berrett passed out 14 assists.

Oran won the JV match 15-2, 15-9.

Scott City 15-15

Perryville 11-11

SCOTT CITY -- Scott City swept visiting Perryville Monday night.

Scott City won the JV match 14-10, 16-14.

Chaffee 15-12-15

New Madrid 14-15-9

CHAFFEE -- It took three matches to decide, but host Chaffee got great performances from three of their varsity girls to defeat New Madrid.

Jill Little was dominant with ten kills, nine digs and seven saves. Amy Burnett pitched in with 19 assists and four saves while Jennifer Vandeven had seven kills, eight digs and three saves.

Chaffee improved its record to 2-6-2.

TENNIS

Cape Central, 9 Dexter, 0

DEXTER -- Cape Central improved to 7-0 by shutting out Dexter Monday.

The JV squad performed just as well with a 10-0 victory.

MALDEN -- Chaffee recorded its second win of the season by blanking Malden at home.

Chaffee's JV squad earned a 3-0 victory as well, improving to 2-9.
