CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Carbondale scored with four minutes remaining in the game as the Cape Girardeau Central High girls soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 tie in its season opener Tuesday.
Amber Voerg had staked Cape Central to a 1-0 lead at the 34-minute mark off a corner kick from Julie Underwood.
"We played a lot of defense," said Cape Central coach Tom Doyle. "They were pretty good offensively. Carbondale's got a good team. They'll win a lot of games this year."
Carbondale won the JV game 1-0.
BASEBALL
Oran 23, Zalma 0
ORAN, Mo. -- Oran opened its season by getting a combined five-inning no-hitter from Trey Graviett and Ryne Wood as the Eagles romped.
Graviett worked the first three innings and struck out eight while walking three. Wood fanned three in two innings.
The Eagles had 17 hits, led by Garrett Cook and Joey Bickings with three each. Tyler Cookson, Matt Bucher and Adam Friga all added two.
Cook homered and drove in three runs, Bucher also homered and Bobby Taylor delivered a grand slam.
Oak Ridge 14, Delta 1
DELTA, Mo. -- Oak Ridge erupted for 13 unanswered runs as it opened its season with a five-inning victory.
With the score tied 1-1, Oak Ridge pushed across five runs in the third off losing pitcher Tanner Baggett. The Blue Jays added eight runs in the fourth.
Winning pitcher Beau Morrison limited Delta to three hits while striking out seven. Morrison also went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double. Zach and Clayton Ruesler each had two hits, including a triple by the former, and two RBIs. Ben Fadler added two hits.
SOFTBALL
Advance 10, Meadow Heights 1
PATTON, Mo. -- Amber Bond turned in a pitching gem in Advance's season opener as she held Meadow Heights hitless.
Bond struck out 11 batters and walked four in the six-inning contest.
Advance lashed out 16 hits with Tracey McCabe and Dana Williams both perfect at the plate. McCabe went 4-for-4 with a double while Williams was 3-for-3 with two triples and five RBIs. Shanna Winchester added two hits, including a double.
BOYS TENNIS
Cape Central 9, De Soto 0
Cape Central opened its season in impressive fashion by blanking De Soto at Southeast Missouri State's tennis courts.
The closest match Central had was 8-5 in the No. 3 singles match.
"This was our first match and I felt the guys played real well," said Cape Central coach Bud Craven. "It's good to get one under our belt."
The Tigers' junior varsity won 3-0.
