ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Central High girls soccer team did not win its opening-round game in the I-55 Classic here Friday.

But the Lady Tigers probably opened plenty of eyes by battling powerhouse St. Charles West to a 1-1 draw. St. Charles West, one of the top teams in the St. Louis area, has lost just once all season and had allowed only four goals in 15 games prior to Friday.

Central, which is 9-3-5, almost pulled off the upset. The Lady Tigers got a first-half unassisted goal from Katie Hawkins and they still led 1-0 until the final 10 minutes, when St. Charles West finally scored the equalizer.

"We played real well," said Central coach Tom Doyle. "We needed a good game against a good team like that."

In other first-round tournament action, Jackson (11-5) beat St. Louis Notre Dame 1-0, Cape Notre Dame (8-8-2) tied with Parkway West 0-0 and Poplar Bluff lost to Ft. Zumwalt South 4-0.

The eight-team event will conclude today as Cape Central, Jackson and Notre Dame all play two matches.

Perryville 6, Farmington 0

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Perryville continued its impressive season with a lopsided victory.

The Lady Pirates (14-2-2) got two goals from both Brooke Winkler and Brittany Weibrecht while Amy Garris and Robin Mueller added one each.

Jenna Schuessler had two assists, with Winkler, Stacy Baer and Julia Heuring recording one apiece. Keeper Amanda Nuyt recorded the shutout.

SOFTBALL

Scott City 5, Advance 0

ADVANCE, Mo. -- Shana Wadlington pitched a gem as Scott City blanked Advance.

Wadlington allowed just one hit while striking out nine and walking three.

The Lady Rams (9-6) were led offensively by Wadlington, Amanda O'Brien and Ashley Lynn, who all had two hits.

Chaffee 7, Dexter 6

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to win an extra-inning thriller.

The Lady Red Devils (10-2) had 10 hits, led by Jennifer Vandeven with three. Casey Graviett and Courtney Loucks added two each.

Ashley Pepple was the winning pitcher, in relief of Vandeven. Pepple hurled the final four innings, allowing three hits and one run, with three strikeouts and one walk.

BASEBALL

St. Vincent 15, Meadow Heights 4

OAK RIDGE, Mo. -- St. Vincent romped in five innings during the opening round of the four-team Oak Ridge Tournament.

Freshman Zack Moll was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run and four hits while going the distance. He fanned five and walked four.

Josh Triller had three hits for the Indians (7-8), who finished with 14 hits. Triller also scored three runs and drove in two. Mike Hotop added two hits and three RBIs.

Poplar Bluff Invitational

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Lindsey Meyr had a huge day to help lead Jackson's girls to a second-place finish in the eight-team meet.

Host Poplar Bluff won both divisions. Bluff's girls scored 163 points to knock off Jackson (143). Rounding out the top four were North County (140) and Sikeston (67).

On the boys side, Bluff had 175 points, followed by Cape Central (109), Jackson (103.5) and Sikeston (87). Cape Central's girls did not compete.

Meyr won the 400-meters and long jump while also anchoring Jackson's victorious 400 and 1,600 relay teams. Both squads also included Rachel Smith and Jeanna Bolen while Heather West was on the 400 and Jessica Venable on the 1,600.

"Lindsey really had a good meet," said Jackson coach Bob Sink.

Other individual winners for the Lady Indians were Krista Mouser in the 3,200 and Heidi Jansen in the shot put.

The lone victory for Jackson's boys, who continue to compete without injured star sprinter Mario Whitney, came from Jon Coleman in the 110 high hurdles. Whitney should be completely healthy when the postseason begins next month.

Further Jackson results are in Scoreboard. Cape Central results were unavailable.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Visitation 109, Notre Dame 76

ST. LOUIS -- Notre Dame got two individual victories apiece from Lindsay Kuper and Ali Tyson but still dropped to 4-4 in dual meets.

Kuper won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle while Tyson captured the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Kuper and Tyson also competed on the Lady Bulldogs' victorious 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams that also included Janelle Essner and Rachel Ruopp.
