CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Cape Central's and Perryville's girls soccer teams advanced to the championship semifinals of the Fralish Cup Tournament with a pair of victories Friday.

Cape Central (9-2-1), the defending champion, remained unscored upon in its two years in the tournament. The Lady Tigers defeated Racine (Wis.) 4-0 and Urbana (Ill.) 1-0.

Cape Central goaltender Heather Hey stopped 17 shots on day, including 13 against Racine.

Amber Voerg scored three goals against Racine, while Amanda Hiler scored the other. Trisha Klipfel assisted on the first goal and Ashlie Voerg assisted on the latter three.

The Lady Tigers outshot Urbana 23-4 but weren't able to score until the final minute of the game when Lorie Bittle deposited a pass from Mindy Hoffman.

Perryville (9-2-1) won both its games over Highland (Ill.) and Champaign (Ill.) in identical 2-0 fashion. Both games were scoreless at halftime.

Amanda Schumer and Britney Weibrecht netted second-half goals against Highland. Cindy Rhyne and Heather Hager scored in the second half against Champaign. Jenna Schuessler and Brooke Winkler assisted on the latter goals.

Perryville will face Carbondale at noon today in the championship semifinals. Central will also play in a semifinal at noon.

BASEBALL

Jackson 16, Poplar Bluff 0

POPLAR BLUFF -- Jackson Indians picked up a rare road win over Poplar Bluff in a five-inning SEMO conference game.

The win halted a two-game skid for Jackson.

"It was nice to get back in the win column," said Jackson coach Sam Sides.

Jackson's Josh Hopkins had a big day at the plate and on the mound. He went 2-for-2 with five RBIs and two runs scored, while shutting out the Mules on two hits. Hopkins (2-1) fanned four and gave up one walk.

Jason Brown chipped in with four RBIs on a 2-for-3 performance which included a two-run homer.

Jackson (6-6, 2-3) jumped out to a three run lead in the first inning, scored five in the third, two in the fourth, and six in the fifth.

St. Vincent 9, Oak Ridge 1

OAK RIDGE -- Tyler Wengert pitched a four-hit gem for St. Vincent as the Indians improved to 5-8 on the season.

Wengert went six innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Ryan Brown, Justin Amschler and Gabe Hotop had two hits each for St. Vincent. Brown and Hotop each had two runs batted in while Amschler provided three RBIs. Brandon Carroll doubled and reached base four times.

Ben Fadler suffered the loss in six innings. He allowed nine runs, seven earned, on seven hits. He struck out four.

Woodland 7, Leopold 2

LEOPOLD -- Woodland's fifth inning rally broke open a tight, well-played game.

Trailing by a run going into their half of the fifth, the Cardinals exploded for five runs to put the game out of reach.

Winning pitcher Danny Lincoln threw a nifty four-hitter, shutting out Leopold through the last four innings. Lincoln struck out nine.

Leopold's Adam Landewee had half of his team's hits going 2-for-3 with an RBI double.

Jason Van De Ven, entering the game with an outstanding ERA of 0.30, went the distance for Leopold and took the loss. Leopold's record fell to 3-4, while Woodland upped it's record to 5-2.

GIRLS SOFTBALL

Lady Devils Softball Classic

Chaffee 6, Delta 5

CHAFFEE -- Chaffee freshman Kate Pfefferkorn singled to right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh as the Lady Red Devils remained undefeated with a 6-5 win over Delta in the Lady Devils Softball Classic Friday night.

In other tournament action, Advance defeated Oran 11-3, Dexter beat Scott City 8-7 and New Madrid knocked off East Prairie 8-0.

In the Chaffee game, the Lady Red Devils (9-0) managed just three hits but took advantage of 11 walks.

Amy Burnett was the winning pitcher. She went seven innings and allowed five runs, two earned, on nine hits and three walks.

Rebecca Cook suffered the complete-game loss. She struck out five and allowed just three hits.

Delta got two hits apiece from Amy Wyckoff, Rebecca Below and Laura Reiminger.

Advance improved to 8-1 behind the pitching of Sarah Heisserer (2-1) and Misti Senciboy.

Senciboy led the Oran hit parade going 3-for-3 including a double and a triple and driving in four runs.

At 9 a.m. today, Delta will take on East Prairie and Advance will play Scott City. At 11, Chaffee and New Madrid will hook up in a battle of undefeated schools and Oran and Dexter will square off.
