Top seeds Cape Central and Jackson breezed into the semifinals of the Noon Optimist Spring Classic girls soccer tournament Friday at Notre Dame High School.
Cape Central, the No. 1 seed, recorded an 11-1 thumping of No. 8 Farmington, No. 2 Jackson peppered No. 7 Marion 6-0.
In the other first-round games, No. 3 Perryville defeated No. 6 St. Vincent 4-0, and No. 4 Poplar Bluff downed No. 5 Notre Dame on penalty kicks (4-2) after the game finished regulation tied 1-1.
In today's 11:30 a.m. semifinals, Cape Central (13-4-1) will face Poplar Bluff, while Jackson (11-4-2) will play Perryville. In 10:30 a.m. consolation action, St. Vincent will play Marion and Farmington will meet Notre Dame. The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Amber Voerg led Cape Central's assault on Farmington with five goals while Heather Hobbs added three. Rebecca Hellrich, Jessica Ham and Mindy Hoffman added single goals. Tricia Klipfel assisted on three of the goals and Cameron Bennett, Sarah Brown, Lorie Bittle and Ham each assisted on one.
Jackson played a scoreless first half with Marion despite holding a 24-0 shot advantage. The Lady Indians finally broke through early in the second half on a Sarah Schlick goal. Lacie Hodo later added four goals and Courtney Urhahn tallied one.
Jackson held a 47-0 shot advantage for the game.
Poplar Bluff took a 1-0 lead into the second half against Notre Dame (4-13-1), but Courtney Vickery scored the tying goal 20 minutes into the half off a pass from Nicole Passini. The Lady Mules went on to outscore Notre Dame 4-2 on penalty kicks.
BASEBALL
Delta 10, Bloomfield 9
DELTA -- Delta scored five runs in the fifth inning on its way to its second win of the season.
Delta (2-11) scored the only run through the first three innings before both teams began to light up the scoreboard.
After Bloomfield plated three runs in the top of the fifth for a 4-3 lead, Bloomfield scored five times for a 8-4 lead. Bloomfield tied the score in the top of the sixth, but the Bobcats moved ahead for good in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs.
Robbie Lemonds got the victory in relief of starter Terry Green. Lemonds went 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits, walking three and striking out two. Four of the five runs he allowed were unearned.
Delta had 14 hits, led by a 3-for-4 day by Lance Kinder. Lemonds, Green, Thomas Horn, Aaron Jenkins and Pat Lingo all had two hits. Green finished with three runs and Horn and Jenkins each had two RBIs. Jenkins' hits included a triple.
Leopold 7, Oak Ridge 2
LEOPOLD -- Leopold pitcher Jason Van de Ven, the area's strikeout leader heading into this week, continued his dominance on the mound for Leopold, striking out 13 in six innings of work on Thursday.
The two runs charged against him were unearned. Van de Ven walked two and allowed four hits.
Scott VanGennip singled and doubled and had one run batted in for Leopold (6-5). Garan Engelen doubled and provided two RBIs for the Wildcats.
For Oak Ridge, Ben Fadler suffered the loss. He gave up five hits and six walks while striking out four. Fadler also doubled and had an RBI.
Clayton Ruesler had two hits for the Blue Jays.
GIRLS SOFTBALL
Leopold 17, Oak Ridge 2
LEOPOLD -- Leopold's softball team improved its record to 8-3 with an easy, three-inning win over Oak Ridge on Thursday.
Jodi VanGennip was the winning pitcher. She allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out one.
Leopold freshman Amanda Dunn went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in. Ashley Jansen went 2-for-3.
BOYS GOLF
Dexter 155, Cape Central 164
Cape Central's Josh Miller shot a 3-over-par 38 to finish in a three-way tie with Kyle Christian and Jonny Vines of Dexter for medalist, but the Tigers fell in the dual meet played on the front nine at Cape Girardeau Country Club.
Nick Harter had a 40 and Dusty and Paul York each had 43s to complete the team score for Central (7-9).
Brett Hale carded a 39 and Matt Christian a 40 to round out Dexter's scoring.
Central returns to action Monday in the Farmington Invitational.
St. Vincent 146, St. Pius 176
PERRYVILLE -- St. Vincent's golf team, which won a state title two years ago and placed third last year, posted its best team score in school history as four Indians carded scores of less than 40 on Thursday.
Andrew Prost led the way with a 35 at the Perryville Country Club, followed by Jon Paulus and Ryan Prost with 36s and Mark Gotto with a 39.
"It was amazing," said St. Vincent coach Tom Prost. "If we shoot like this, we'll win state again."
The Indians improved to 12-2 overall and 10-1 in the Jefferson County Conference.
TRACK
Jackson girls victorious
POPLAR BLUFF -- Jackson's girls turned in seven first-place finishes in winning the seven-team Poplar Bluff Invitational Friday.
Jackson, led by a pair of wins by Jennifer Love in the hurdle events, finished first with a 194 total. Poplar Bluff was second with 164. Cape Central took its boys, but did not compete in the girls' competition.
Poplar Bluff won the boys' competition with 174.5 points and was followed by Sikeston (125.5), Cape Central (114.5) and Jackson (103.5).
