The Cape Girardeau Central High baseball Tigers played one of their better defensive games of the year Tuesday, helping Ross Bennett to a 4-0 shutout victory over Dexter at Tiger Field.
The game, which was supposed to be played at Dexter, improved the Tigers to 8-10 as Bennett pushed his record to 2-3. Bennett pitched all seven innings, allowing only three hits and no walks. Bennett struck out six.
"Ross threw strikes today and with him doing that I think it really helped our defense," Central coach Steve Williams said. "We only made one error and Shane Gibson and Jeff Beasley made a couple great plays in the field."
Central recorded 10 hits, with Gibson, Beasley and Andy Sweet collecting two each.
The Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with Sweet scoring on a groundout. Central added another run in the sixth to make it 2-0 when Beasley singled, stole second and scored on a Chris Bradshaw single.
Central closed out the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh. Derek Hiett opened the inning with a triple and scored on a Brian Beard groundout. With two outs, Gibson and Beasley strung together back-to-back doubles to account for the final score.
Central will host Farmington in a makeup game today.
