PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- John Miesner pitched six strong innings as Perryville claimed its first win of the season.

Miesner allowed just two runs and four hits while striking out three and walking two as the Pirates improved to 1-1 and dropped the Indians to 1-2.

"I was real pleased with John's pitching. I thought he did a very good job," said Perryville coach Dennis Glueck. "He had good control and his breaking ball and change were working real well. He had Jackson's hitters off balance."

Perryville's 10-hit attack was led by Andrew Meyr, who had three hits and drove in four runs. Colby Palisch and Mark Cissell each added two hits. Palisch scored twice and had two RBIs.

Lance Limbaugh had three of Jackson's seven hits. Jason Brown was the losing hurler.

Notre Dame splits

JONESBORO, Ark. -- Notre Dame split its two games during the opening day of the Nettleton Tournament, a five-team, round-robin affair.

The Bulldogs (1-2) began the day by facing undefeated Pine Bluff, ranked No. 1 in Arkansas, and the result was a 10-2 defeat, thanks in part to six Notre Dame errors.

Scott Eftink was the losing hurler. He allowed eight hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings. Freshman Lee Essner gave up five hits and six runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Notre Dame then posted an impressive 4-2 victory over Central Arkansas Christian, last year's Arkansas Class 2A runner-up.

Scott Wittenborn was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits and one earned run in going the seven-inning distance. He struck out three and walked five.

"Other than the walks, Scott threw real well," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett.

Shane Kistner had two of the Bulldogs' six hits while Todd Friend delivered the game's big blow, a three-run homer in the fifth inning that snapped a 1-1 tie.

Notre Dame will close out tourney play at 4 p.m. today with a game against host Nettleton.
