MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- Cape Central fell to 0-2 in the USA Classic baseball tournament Thursday, dropping a 6-0 decision to Tupelo, Miss.

Central (1-2) managed just three singles while Tupelo (14-5) banged out 10 hits off three Tiger pitchers.

Tupelo scored its first run in the top of the second and added two runs in the third. It broke the game open with three runs in the seventh.

Craig Ringwald pitched 6 2-3 innings and suffered the loss. Ringwald surrendered seven hits, walked one and struck out nine.

"We didn't play that badly," said Cape Central coach Steve Williams. "We just didn't hit enough."

Ross Bennett, Tatum Kitchen and Andy Sweet accounted for the Tiger hits.

The Tigers dropped their tournament opener Wednesday night in heart-breaking fashion, a 3-2 loss to Henderson, Tenn. After scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game 2-2, Central committed two errors in the bottom of the inning and ultimately saw Bennett walk in the winning run with two outs.

Central returns to action today with a 3 p.m. game against Millington, Tenn.

Scott City 10, Portageville 0

SCOTT CITY -- Scott City opened its season Thursday with an easy six-inning win at home against Portageville.

Scott City's Justin Braun went the distance, allowing just one hit and walking none while striking out nine.

The Rams scored in each inning; Scott City led 4-0 after the first frame and increased its advantage to 6-0 entering the third.

Tim Lowery, John Wipfler and Lance Amick each had two hits for the Rams.

Advance 11, Meadow Heights 0

ADVANCE -- In a game rescheduled from Tuesday, Advance beat Meadow Heights in the minimum five innings at home Thursday.

Advance (1-0) scored six runs in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third.

Matt Welch and Alan Stevens both went 3-for-3 and scored two runs for the Hornets. Stevens had three RBIs, while Welch had one.

Chris Wallace was the winning pitcher. Wallace allowed one hit in four innings of work while striking out 10 and walking two.

Meadow Heights dropped to 0-1.

Softball

Scott City 13, Portageville 3

SCOTT CITY -- Scott City opened its season Thursday by hammering visiting Portageville in six innings.

Scott City's Heather Miller earned the victory. Miller threw four innings, allowing two hits while striking out six.

Amy O'Brien, Miller, Sarah Glenn and Jennifer Miller each had three hits. O'Brien had a home run and a double, Heather Miller had three doubles and Jennifer Miller added a double.

Golf

ND wins triangular

JACKSON -- Notre Dame made its debut Monday and emerged with a seven-shot victory in a triangular meet with Perryville and St. Vincent held on the par-36 front nine at Bent Creek Golf Course.

Notre Dame, led by medalist Jonathan LeGrand's 40, finished with a 178. Perryville shot 185 and St. Vincent followed at 191.

Notre Dame's scores were rounded out by Chris Koepper (45), Matt Howard (45) and Dan Buerck (48).

St. Vincent's John Clemens and Perryville's Mark Tan led their teams with 45s.

"Given it was our first match and the windy conditions, it was not a bad score for the early going," said Notre Dame coach Chris Janet.

Notre Dame returns to action Monday in a triangular meet with Cape Central and Jackson.

Cape Central 9, C'ville 0

CARUTHERSVILLE -- Cape Central kicked off its season by shutting out Caruthersville Thursday.

Central won all nine varsity matches and all six JV matches as well.

POPLAR BLUFF -- Central's junior high track and field teams opened the season Thursday at Poplar Bluff.

Central's ninth-grade boys beat the Mules 80-56. The eighth-grade boys lost 81-42 and the eighth-grade girls lost 58-56.
