Even the best seasons have to end.
The Central football team completed the finest football season in the school's history with a loss to Webb City in the Class 4 state championship on Saturday.
The Cardinals claimed their fifth consecutive state title with a 48-21 victory over the Tigers at the Edward Jones Dome.
Central ended it's season with a school-record 12 wins and an appearance in its first state championship game.
The Tigers raced out to an early lead against Webb City, which defeated them 46-0 in a state semifinal last season, but were overtaken in the second quarter by the Cardinals, who never looked back.
Central scored twice in the opening quarter, building a 14-0 lead after the first.
Webb City replied with a 27-point second quarter and was never threatened again.
Jordan Franklin set up the first Central touchdown with a 19-yard rush, and quarterback Peyton Montgomery finished it off with a 5-yard run.
The second Central score was set up by an interception by Al Young, who had two in the game. Montgomery finished the drive with a 1-yard run.
The Tigers' other score came in the third quarter when Jalen Reddin made an improbable catch of a pass that was tipped by a Webb City defender before he caught it.
The Tigers scored more points on Webb City than any opponent all season. The previous high was 15. Webb City also scored more points on Central than any opponent this season. The previous high was 40.
