Cape beats Scott County Post 369, grabs No. 5 seed for district

The Cape Girardeau American Legion baseball team picked up its second district victory and avoided the No. 6 seed for this week's District 14 tournament by beating Scott County Post 369 (Medicap) 13-6 in a slugfest Saturday afternoon at Notre Dame.

Cape improved to 17-21 overall and 2-3 in district play. Ford & Sons has won seven of its last eight games.

Cape will play Monday against Twin Rivers in the first round of the six-team, double-elimination district tournament, which is being hosted by Dunklin County.

Scott County will have the No. 6 seed and will play No. 3 Jackson on Monday.

In Saturday's game, Cape hammered out 16 hits. Kent Deason had three, while Blake Slattery, Kendal Deason, Scott Brueckner, Sean Bard and Michael Taylor each had two. Slattery and Bard had doubles, while Brueckner had a triple.

Cory Huskey picked up the win with seven innings of relief work. He allowed three runs -- one earned -- on four hits while striking out 11.

Kirk Boeller had started and allowed three runs in one inning.

Taylor finished for Cape, allowing one hit in the ninth inning.

Scott County had eight hits, led by three from Shane Menz and two by Caleb Daughhetee. Chad Friend hit a home run.

Daughhetee took the loss in relief of Andy Stephens, who had allowed four runs in three innings. Daughhetee, coming off back-to-back no-hitters in his last two starts, allowed five runs in three innings.

Cape juniors 1-1 at zone

The Cape Legion junior team resumed play in the zone tournament Saturday, losing 4-1 to Festus in a game that was suspended Thursday.

Luke Moll had two of Cape's three hits.

Later Saturday, Cape (26-12) stayed alive in the double-elimination event by beating Anheuser-Busch 10-8. Abe Dirnberger and Chris Brotherton each had two hits. Tyler Propst pitched five innings for the win, and Mark Himmelberg earned a save.

Cape plays Festus again at 1 p.m. today in Ste. Genevieve. The winner of that game will need to beat Manchester twice to claim the title.
