The McDowell Capahas called on their classic comeback style to defeat Ste. Genevieve 9-7 Sunday and cap a two-victory day at Capaha Field.
McDowell (22-10) defeated Goreville 6-2 in the afternoon, but found themselves in late trouble against Ste. Genevieve.
Ste. Gen took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning after scoring three runs in the first and two in the second.
McDowell pushed across three runs in the fifth, two scoring on a Tom Breuer single. The Capahas closed the gap to 5-4 in the sixth on a Lance Craft RBI single, but Ste. Gen added two runs in the seventh for a 7-4 lead.
Mike Miller homered with one out in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-5. With two out, Ste. Genevieve prolonged the Capahas' hopes as Kevin Vent reached on an error. Tom Bolen then made the error a costly one with a game-tying, two-run homer.
McDowell's Julio Vega ended the game in the eighth when he homered with Craft aboard, the Capahas' third home run of the game.
Craft finished with four hits and Shawn Pemberton and Bolen had two apiece.
Jerry Wolsey, the third Capaha hurler, picked up the win with 5 1-3 innings of three-hit pitching. He struck out four and walked one. He followed Danny Simpher and Jeff Lappe to the mound.
Richie Phillips recorded the win in the opener, allowing three hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked one. Brandon West and Wolsey each pitched an inning in relief.
Goreville scored single runs in the first and second innings, but McDowell unleashed all the offense it would need in a five-run second. Robert Kern belted a two-run homer in the inning and Ryan Murphy and Craft each had RBI singles.
Mike Miller later added an RBI single in the fifth to conclude the scoring.
The Capahas return to action Saturday when they visit Valmayer for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
