The Plaza Tire Capahas suffered just their second loss of the season as the host St. Louis Golden Spikes posted a 7-5 victory Wednesday night.
"They've got a pretty good ballclub, and they hit the ball well," said Capahas manager Jess Bolen, whose squad fell to 10-2.
The Capahas were outhit 12-9. Robby Moore and Josh Eftink both went 3-for-4 to lead Plaza Tire, while Lance Seasor homered.
Plaza Tire used four pitchers, with Kyle Long getting the loss. In 1 1/3 innings spanning the seventh and eighth, he allowed four runs (three earned) and four hits.
Josh Parham, the starter, allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits in two innings. Chad Bogenpohl gave up one run and three hits in four innings. Jason Chavez retired the final two batters in the eighth, and he allowed two hits.
The Golden Spikes broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh as they took the lead for good.
Riverdogs fall on the road
The Cape Girardeau Riverdogs fell to Waterloo (Ill.) 13-4 on the road.
The Riverdogs (4-8) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on a Greg Craft grand slam but could not hold on. Andrew DePeder added a pair of doubles as Cape was limited to just five hits.
Ryan Dailey pitched the first five innings for the Riverdogs and allowed four earned runs. Wayne Essner took the loss in relief.
Jackson Senior Babe Ruth rolls
The Jackson Senior Babe Ruth team pounded the visiting Ste. Genevieve Yankees 12-2 in seven innings.
Jackson jumped out to a 7-2 lead after two innings and enforced the mercy rule after the seventh.
Jackson (18-5) had 14 hits, including three from Trevor Thompson. Sam Lincoln had four RBI and two hits, including a two-run home run in the third inning. Brett Groening and Kyle Brown each added two hits.
Sam Sander struck out seven batters and improved to 5-1 on the mound with a complete game win.
Jackson will take on visiting Charleston in a doubleheader Sunday.
Cape Junior Legion wins doubleheader
The Cape Girardeau American Legion junior team remained undefeated in district play with a doubleheader sweep of Twin Rivers on the road.
Cape edged the host 3-1 in the first game and won the nightcap 14-4 in six innings. Cape improved to 15-6 overall and 7-0 in its district.
Garrett Stevens pitched 6 1/3 innings in the first game for the victory. Justin Myers earned the save. Brooks Osburn led Cape offensively with two hits.
In the nightcap, Abraham Dirnberger and Brett Heischmidt had three hits and two RBI apiece as Cape slammed 16 hits on Twin Rivers.
Cape scored five runs in the sixth inning and held on to enforce the mercy rule. Mark Himmelberg struck out three in a complete game victory on the mound.
