FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. -- In a game that stretched into the late hours Wednesday, the McDowell Capahas rallied for a 7-6 victory over Fairview Heights in 10 innings.
The Capahas trailed 5-3 entering the ninth inning, but staged a three-run rally for a 6-5 advantage. Fairview Heights then prolonged the contest with a run in the home half.
In the 10th inning, Mike Miller doubled with two out to score Ryan Murphy with the game-winning run. Murphy had walked with one out and was sacrificed to second by winning pitcher Lanson DeBrock.
The Capahas improved to 6-3 with the win. They banged out 11 hits, including a third-inning home run by Steve Kress that tied the score at 1-1.
Fairview Heights moved ahead 5-1 with two-run innings in the fifth and sixth.
The Capahas pushed across single runs in the seventh and eighth.
In the ninth, Murphy walked, went to third on a Jeff Lappe single and scored on a Miller groundout. Julio Vega walked before Robert Kern tripled off the center field wall for a 6-5 lead.
DeBrock pitched two innings, allowing two hits, one unearned run and a walk. He had two strikeouts, including a big one with one-out, the bases-loaded and the score tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth.
Jerry Wolsey started, pitching 5 1/3 innings. He struck out seven, allowed seven hits, two walks and five earned runs. Danny Simpher followed with 2 2/3 innings of work. He struck out five, walked three and allowed two hits.
Miller finished with three hits, two went for doubles. Kern added three hits.
McDowell returns to action Saturday when it visits the St. Louis Printers for a doubleheader.
