Capahas pick up lopsided victory vs. St. Louis Bulls

It took little time for the Burger King Capahas to begin their offensive onslaught against the St. Louis Bulls on Friday night.

No. 2 hitter Drew Morecraft, who went 5-for-5, drove in the only run the Capahas would need in the bottom of the first en route to a 12-0 victory in seven innings at Capaha Field.

"It was a good win," Capahas assistant coach Tom Bolen said. "I know that it was difficult for them to travel out of St. Louis on a Friday night with a full complement to their team, so we knew there could be a lopsided [game]."

The Capahas scattered 14 hits in the contest and scored a run in each inning except the fifth.

They led 2-0 after the first inning. Morecraft tripled to score Chase Urhahn and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chase Simmons.

The Capahas doubled their lead in the second. Cam Womack hit a sacrifice fly to score Kyle James, who'd tripled, and Morecraft doubled in Brady Wright to make it 4-0.

"This week I kind of changed up my stance, got down a little bit more in my legs instead of standing up straight," Morecraft said. "And it was just one of those nights, just seeing it well."

Womack's second sac fly in the bottom of the third put the Capahas up 5-0.

"Hitting's contagious, and so is not hitting," Bolen said. "Drew had a heck of a game. He's one of our veterans. He led by example. Then some of the little things -- Cam Womack had a couple sac flies."

An RBI fielder's choice and a two-run double by Alex Heuring made it 8-0 after four innings.

The Capahas plated four more in the sixth.

Garret Reynolds had an RBI single and the other three runs scored on two-out fly balls dropped by the Bulls outfielders.

"They were kind of all over the zone. They were just giving us good pitches to hit and we were putting good, quality swings on them," Morecraft said. "They fell tonight for us. Wednesday night we had a tough time getting them to fall, and they started falling tonight. It was nice."

The Capahas, who were handed their first loss Wednesday vs. the Waterloo Millers, improved to 6-1.

Tyler Thompson and Cody Heisserer combined for the four-hit shutout.

Thompson started and allowed two hits -- both in the first inning -- in three innings of work. Heisserer pitched the final four frames, allowing a hit in the fourth and the seventh.

Each walked one and struck out four.

"We picked up Tyler Thompson and he was a great addition," Bolen said. "Cody Heisserer, he's a great athlete. He can come in and play any position we ask him, but he wants to pitch this year, and so we gave him the ball."

The Capahas and Bulls face off in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Capaha.

"We all want to play the best of our ability for Skip [manager Jess Bolen] since this is his last year," Morecraft said. "We want to make it a good one for him and send him out on a high note."
