SAUGET, Ill. -- Cape Girardeau's Kohlfeld Capahas notched a much-needed victory here Tuesday night as they held off Sauget 5-3.
The Capahas improved to 8-6 on the season.
"It's good to win a ballgame like that," said Capahas manager Jess Bolen. "It was a close game and a well-played game. Sauget has a good ballclub. They're a college all-star team with players from Missouri, Illinois and other schools."
Kohlfeld received strong pitching from three hurlers. Jerry Wolsey started and notched the victory. He worked into the seventh inning, allowing all three runs (two earned) and six hits while striking out two and walking two.
Scott Hopper relieved Wolsey with runners on second and third and nobody out in the seventh. Hopper retired three straight batters -- two on strikeouts -- while allowing only a sacrifice fly.
Hopper worked a perfect eighth before walking the leadoff batter in the ninth. On came Danny Simpher, who retired the next three batters -- two on strikeouts -- to notch a save.
"We got excellent pitching," Bolen said. "Wolsey did a real good job getting us into the seventh and Hopper and Simpher were really impressive out of the bullpen."
The Capahas had eight hits, led by Derek Dirnberger with two doubles and three RBIs. Brian Schaefer also had two hits.
Kohlfeld jumped on top with two runs in the first and never trailed. Schaefer had an RBI single and Darrick Smith scored on a wild pitch.
The Capahas will return to action Friday night when they host Granite City, Ill., in an 8:15 contest at Capaha Field.
