The Capahas baseball team will open play at the 81st annual National Baseball Congress World Series on Friday, it was announced Tuesday.
The Capahas will take the field for the first game of the tournament, which will take place at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kansas. They will face the Jasper (Indidana) Reds at 10 a.m. Friday morning.
The winner of that game will have a day of rest before returning to the field Sunday for a winner's bracket contest. The loser will play at 9 a.m. Saturday for the right to remain in the tournament.
The NBC World Series is the traditional ending to the Capahas amateur baseball season. The National Baseball Congress, according to its website, is "an organization of 15 amateur and semi-professional baseball leagues operating in the United States and Canada." The World Series has been held every year since 1935.
The "first week" of the tournament includes the Capahas, an 121-year-old team that does not play in a league, and 15 other teams competing for a spot in championship week, which features additional teams that play in organized leagues and earned automatic bids into the championship bracket.
The winner of the first week's bracket will be determined Thursday, July 30, and the overall World Series winner will be crowned Saturday, Aug. 8.
The Capahas closed out their rain-plagued regular season with a record of 15-4 after defeating the Charleston RiverDogs 9-1 on Sunday.
