WATERLOO, Ill. -- Notre Dame product Josh Eftink went 2-for-2 with a fifth-inning, three-run homer and five runs batted in as the Craftsman Union Capahas defeated Waterloo, Ill. 10-8 to avenge an earlier loss.
The Capahas held several big leads in the game, including 3-0, 4-1 and 8-3 but Waterloo wouldn't go away.
Jake Alley was the winning pitcher. In 6 2/3 innings he struck out seven. Aaron Gurley pitched well in relief, giving up just one hit and striking out three in 2 1/3 innings. He pitched a flawless ninth inning to nail down the save.
Tristen McDonald, Denver Stuckey and Steve Kress all had two hits apiece for the Caps, who improved to 11-4.
The Capahas suffered a 6-5, 10-inning loss to Waterloo earlier this year.
"Right now, we're playing halfway decent," Capahas manager Jess Bolen said. "We're still making mistakes; we're a young team. We've been shuffling our lineup quite a bit. We just need some more games and we'll be all right."
The Capahas will host a three-team round-robin affair today. Goreville, Ill. and Springfield, Ill. will visit. Springfield and Goreville will play at 1 p.m., followed by the Capahas vs. Springfield and the Caps vs. Goreville.
