A pair of infield singles helped bring home the winning run as host Valmeyer, Illinois, prevailed 6-5 over the Plaza Tire Capahas with a ninth-inning tally Saturday.

The infield field singles followed a one-out double, and the final blow was a two-out bouncer off the bat of James Denorski.

"It was one of the those games where any team could have won," said Capahas coach Jess Bolen, who saw his team drop its third straight game and fall to 13-6. "We had some tough breaks."

The game started off well for the Capahas. Cody Heisserer led off the game with a single and Blake Slattery, batting second, followed with a home run for a 2-0 lead.

However, Valmeyer duplicated the feat in the bottom of the inning, with No. 2 hitter Ted Whealing tying the score with a home run.

The Capahas regained the lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by Sean Bard.

Valmeyer took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth with the help of two Capaha errors.

Bard capped a three-RBI day with a two-run home run in the sixth that tied the score at 5-5.

Valmeyer struck for its three hits in the ninth off reliever Justin Landewee, who pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. Landewee struck out three, walked one and allowed four hits.

Capahas starting pitcher Riley Calvird allowed seven hits over the first seven innings. He struck out seven, walked three and allowed four runs -- three earned.

The Capahas were without shortstop Kenton Parmley, who may miss the remainder of the season with a pulled hamstring.

A doubleheader had been planned, but the teams agreed to play just one nine-inning game due to doubleheaders today.

The Capahas will play in Springfield, Illinois, facing the Pallies at 2 p.m.
