PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Erv Armbruster knew the Plaza Tire Capahas would be gunning for his Perryville baseball team Tuesday night.
The Longhorns, in their first year of existence last summer, stunned the Capahas 3-2 to split the season series.
"They'll be trying to get back at us for that one," Armbruster said prior to Tuesday's contest at the Perryville City Park.
The Capahas, who have been around since 1894 to rank among the nation's oldest amateur baseball teams, did what Armbruster feared -- and in a big way.
Plaza Tire romped 20-1 behind a 23-hit attack that featured a home run and six doubles. The game was stopped after seven innings by the 10-run mercy rule.
The Capahas improved to 5-0, having outscored the opposition 68-11. Perryville fell to 0-3.
"They've got a great team and a great tradition," said Armbruster, Perryville's manager. "We're trying to build our program. We had a good turnout this year. We've got about 18, 19 guys. I turned down 15 kids who wanted to play."
Capahas manager Jess Bolen, noting how many summer teams have folded over the years, welcomes having another squad so close to Cape Girardeau.
"To have another team just 30 or 40 miles up the road, it's good," said Bolen, whose squad will host Perryville on June 17.
Tuesday's game was scoreless through two innings. The Capahas put up eight third-inning runs and the rout was on.
"We're playing well," said Kody Campbell, who homered and had four RBIs during the third-inning explosion. "We've got a good lineup top to bottom."
Campbell said the Capahas never overlook any opponent.
"You never want to take a team lightly. Anything can happen any game," he said.
The Capahas sent 13 batters to the plate and had seven hits in the third inning. Campbell's three-run homer was the big blow and he later added an RBI single.
Jordan Kimball had the other key hit in the frame, a two-run double.
Plaza Tire kept on the pressure. Another big inning followed in the fourth as the Capahas sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on six hits, including Blake Slattery's two-run double.
"One thing I'm impressed with our team is the authority of hits with wood [bats]," Bolen said. "They're hitting the ball hard."
Slattery and Sean Bard each went 4 for 6. Slattery drove in four runs and scored three times. Bard doubled twice and had three RBIs.
Daryl Graham, Kenton Parmley and Ky Burgess all had three hits. Parmley doubled twice, drove in three and scored three. Graham scored three runs.
Campbell, Kimball and Tyler Qualls added two hits apiece. Kimball had three RBIs.
"We've got a pretty good lineup," Bolen said.
Brad LaBruyere pitched four shutout innings for the win. He allowed three hits, struck out six and walked one.
Kirk Boeller, Trent Wise and Jacob Wente all worked one inning. Boeller allowed the run, an unearned tally in the fifth, despite striking out the side.
Jeremy Vaeth and Jose Robles both had two of Perryville's seven hits.
Robles' RBI single scored Vaeth for the Longhorns' lone run.
The Capahas play at Waterloo, Ill., tonight. They begin a five-game weekend homestand Friday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against the St. Louis Printers.
