The Plaza Tire Capahas secured a series win over the St. Louis Bulls on Sunday with a commanding 8-2 victory at Capaha Field.
The Capahas, who split a doubleheader with the Bull on Saturday, led 2-1 heading into the sixth but broke the game open with five runs on four hits and a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Jackson graduate Laban Petzoldt doubled to lead off the inning.
Oran graduate Alex Heuring and Notre Dame graduate Cody Heisserer both singled, with Heisserer driving in two runs, and Hunter Flippo hit a two-run triple to make it 7-1.
The Caps scored once more in the seventh.
"We needed to score some runs," Capahas manager Jess Bolen said. "You know, it's been just one and two and stuff like that. A five-run inning with wood bats, that's an impressive inning."
Heisserer and Heuring each went 2 for 4 in the win.
Sean Bard went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Drew Morecraft had two hits and two RBIs.
Capahas starting pitcher Steven Dooley, who was credited with the win, retired the first nine batters he faced and struck out three before allowing his only run in the fourth inning. He allowed just two hits.
The only other Bulls run to score was in the eighth.
Former Southeast Missouri State pitcher Dylan Lynn struck out a batter, who then reached on a wild pitch and scored on a double -- the only run and hit he allowed in his three innings of work.
Lynn struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Grant Gray pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth in relief. He didn't allow a hit, struck out three and walked one.
"The thing I like about it is that we didn't walk a bunch of batters," Bolen said. "That's what tears you up, especially in wood bat. You can't put people on, and we didn't do that so the pitching was impressive."
The Caps improved to 5-2 with the victory and will play the St. Louis Spikes at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Sauget, Illinois.
