VALMEYER, Ill. --The Craftsman Union Capahas pounded out three home runs and 10 hits as they routed the host squad 12-2 Sunday afternoon during the Valmeyer (Ill.) Classic.
The 15-7 Capahas, who had dropped their tourney opener Saturday, will play at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the consolation final of the eight-team event.
In the first inning, Shawn Yarbrough belted a two-run homer. Then during an eight-run second, Tristen McDonald drilled a three-run blast and Josh Eftink added a solo shot.
Yarbrough had two hits and drove in three runs. Steve Kress had two hits and two RBIs.
Four Capaha pitchers combined on an eight-hitter in the eight-inning, run-rule affair. Starter and winner Richie Phillips allowed one hit in three scoreless innings, with four strikeouts and no walks.
Brad Purcell gave up both runs (one earned) and four hits in three innings. Jake Alley and James Beever each hurled one scoreless frame.
Riverdogs split pair
GOREVILLE, Ill. --The Cape Riverdogs had six home runs and split a doubleheader with Goreville, winning 9-7 and losing 10-9. The Riverdogs are now 5-10.
Josh West and Mark Silverthorn both homered in the opener. West and Jason Underwood each had three of the Riverdogs' 11 hits while Silverthorn and Chris Bradshaw added two each.
Chris Reeves pitched all seven innings, allowing 10 hits. He fanned four and walked one.
Silverthorn homered twice in the nightcap while Reeves and Shane Gibson also went deep. Silverthorn and Gibson each had two of the Riverdogs' 10 hits.
Phil Seyer took the loss, hurling a complete game. He allowed seven hits, with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Cape Yankees win two
The Cape Senior Babe Ruth Yankees swept a doubleheader from Poplar Bluff, romping 10-3 and 12-2.
The Yankees, 20-3 overall, are 9-1 in the SEMO North Senior Babe Ruth League as they have clinched a spot in the state tournament.
Tim Davis pitched all seven innings of the opener, allowing two hits. He fanned eight and walked four. The Yankees had eight hits, led by James Powell with three and Adam Ralls with two.
Matt Wilson hurled five innings of the nightcap, allowing both runs and four hits. The Yankees again had eight hits, two by Powell.
Jackson Legion splits
SIKESTON, Mo. --Jackson Senior Legion won the only game of a doubleheader with Sikeston that was actually played, but the squad still had to settle for a split.
Jackson captured the opener 10-6 despite having only nine players on hand due to a variety of reasons. But manager Gerald Adams said one of the players had to leave before the nightcap, so Jackson was forced to forfeit.
Bryan Austin pitched all seven innings for the win in the opener. He allowed nine hits and five earned runs, with four strikeouts and two walks. Austin hurled shutout, one-hit ball over the final four innings.
Jackson, which is 8-12 overall and 6-12 in District 14, had 12 hits, led by Michael Birk with four. Brad Berry and Pat Kohm both added three hits, with Berry driving in five runs.
