PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. — Jayla Weddington is a whirlwind of energy, a social butterfly, a perpetual motion machine, and above all, a versatile athlete who thrives on pushing her boundaries.

This fall, she’ll be channeling that unbridled enthusiasm into not one, but two sports at Williams Baptist University, where she’ll be both spiking volleyballs and leading cheers as a dual-sport athlete.

“Everyone was just so welcoming and friendly there,” Weddington said. “I have already met so many great people and I’m so excited to start this new adventure.”

This past fall, the outside hitter dominated the net for the Portageville Lady Bulldogs, racking up a team-high 261 kills and 32 blocks. Her offensive firepower and defensive presence were instrumental in the team’s stellar 28-5-2 record, including a Bootheel Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and an MSHSAA Class 2, District 1 Tournament Title.

Weddington’s efforts earned her well-deserved recognition, including All-Bootheel Athletic Conference honors and a spot on the second-team all-district squad.

Known for her powerful hitting, Weddington joked that she “fell in love with volleyball” during her early days of “peewee volleyball.”

However, Weddington’s talents extend beyond the court. She’s also a gifted cheerleader, a role she plans to continue with the Eagles.

“I’ve always been a busy person,” she said. “I can’t see myself not playing more than one sport.”

Weddington’s magnetic temperament is evident in her interactions with teammates, opponents, and even referees and scorekeepers.

“One of the funniest stories that comes to my head would have to be at volleyball camp in Branson when I ran into the scorekeepers’ table and had a full conversation about my perfume,” she laughed.

"Friendship takes a backseat to competition once we step on the court," she said. "It's nothing personal, but the game demands my full focus and intensity."

Beyond her natural athleticism, Weddington’s success is fueled by a mental toughness that allows her to channel her emotions into a relentless drive for improvement

“Being hard on myself is just part of my nature,” she said. “But I’ve realized that volleyball is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Overcoming those internal struggles and learning to channel my emotions has been a huge part of my growth as a player.”

Weddington’s upbeat nature isn’t just a personal trait; it’s a core part of her athletic and personal philosophy, a force she uses to uplift herself and those around her.

“I’ve always tried to uplift people in downtimes, even as a young child,” she said. “In a ball game, I find it easier to uplift others because it also helps me catch my breath and calm down.”

Throughout her athletic journey, Weddington has been fortunate to have a strong support system, including Judy Johnson, her best friend's grandmother and a constant source of encouragement.

“She has been in my life since I was born and always made sure I had whatever I needed,” Weddington said. “She always had a ride to practice no matter what she had going on. I wouldn’t be the player I am without her.”

Weddington’s commitment to inspire and empower others extends beyond the volleyball court; she envisions a future where she can empower young minds as an elementary school teacher.

“I want to make a difference for the kids that grow up not having a lot and think they will never become something,” she explained. “I want them to know that they have so much more potential than they could ever imagine.”

As Weddington prepares to embark on this new chapter, her blend of athleticism, academic ambition, and genuine warmth promises to leave an indelible mark on the Williams Baptist community.

Whether spiking a volleyball, executing a cheer routine, or inspiring young minds in the classroom, Weddington’s future shines as brightly as her trademark smile.
