Notre Dame and Carbondale, Ill., each won close semifinal games Friday to move into the finals of the eight-team Notre Dame Soccer Tournament.The host Bulldogs scored a penalty kick in sudden-death overtime to knock off Jackson 2-1 while Carbondale nipped Cape Girardeau Central 1-0.Jackson (1-2) took an early 1-0 lead when Joey Weber scored about five minutes into the game.Notre Dame (2-0) tied things late in the first half on a goal by Adam Obermiller, with an assist from Cory Elfrink.The contest remained 1-1 through regulation play. In the first 10-minute sudden-death overtime, Jackson was whistled for a hand ball and Oliver Sanders deposited the penalty kick to end the game.The other semifinal was also even, but Carbondale was able to slip past Cape Central (2-1) on a free kick with about three minutes left in the game. Now the Terriers will shoot for their fourth straight title in the Notre Dame tourney.Notre Dame and Carbondale will square off at 2 p.m. today. Cape Central and Jackson will battle for third place at noon. Sikeston and Poplar Bluff play for fifth while Farmington and Hillsboro play for seventh, both games at 10 a.m.
VOLLEYBALLMARBLE HILL -- Woodland dropped the first set of Friday's championship match of the Woodland Tournament against Leopold but recovered to defeat the Lady Wildcats in three sets.Leopold won the opening set 15-12, but Woodland took the second and third sets 15-9, 15-13.Jessica Bollinger led Woodland (2-0) with 11 kills, while Sarah Booth had nine and Lilo Whitener had five kills and three block-kills. Meadow Heights defeated Bell City 15-13, 8-15, 15-11 to place third. In the consolation match, Notre Dame swept Zalma 15-7, 15-10.
SOFTBALLNotre Dame TournamentDongola, Ill., Park Hills, St. Pius and Ste. Genevieve all won first-round games in the eight-team event.At Notre Dame, Dongola beat the host squad 10-2 and Park Hills downed St. Vincent 11-6.At Arena Park, St. Pius defeated Sikeston 10-0 in five innings and Ste. Genevieve beat Poplar Bluff 11-1.Ramona Blankenship was the losing pitcher for Notre Dame (3-3). She allowed 12 hits. The Lady Bulldogs had five hits, two by Bonnie Essner.Jessica Kirn suffered the loss for St. Vincent (1-4). The Lady Indians had eight hits, three by Caitlin Hoeh and two by Jean Brown.There will be eight games today as the tournament concludes. At Notre Dame, the semifinals will feature Dongola vs. Park Hills at 9 a.m. and St. Pius vs. Ste. Genevieve at 10:30. At Arena Park, the consolation semifinals are Notre Dame vs. St. Vincent at 9 a.m. and Sikeston vs. Poplar Bluff at 10:30.The finals will all be played at Notre Dame. Seventh place will be at 1 p.m., fifth place at 2:30, third place at 4 and the championship at 5:30.
