The Southeast Bulldogs captured first place in the Show-Me State Games basketball tournament for 13-year-old boys teams from Aug. 28 to 30 in Columbia, Mo.

Coached by Tom Pape, the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 411-181 in the six tournament games.

The Bulldogs cruised through pool play by beating Prairie Home 83-19, Jeff City Catholic 78-29 and the Excelsior Springs Heat 78-22.

In bracket play, the Bulldogs defeated Jefferson City 52-23, then knocked off the previously undefeated St. Charles Raptors, 59-45.

They won the championship by beating the Loose Creek Heat 60-43.

Pape said he was assisted in preparing the team by Todd Simmers, Joseph Tolbert and Alex Beussink.

Track and field

Jordan Gramling of Cape Girardeau, competing in the boys 11 to 12 age division, placed first in the boys 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, as well as the long jump. Other first-place finishers from the area were: Billy Leighton of Cape Girardeau in the 11-12 3,000-meter run; Kamryn Johnson of Chaffee in the 11-12 short hurdles; Pete Lake of Jackson in the 6-and-under long jump; Tyler Bollinger of Chaffee in the 9-10 long jump; Dustin Johnson of Chaffee in the 11-12 triple jump; John Lake of Jackson in the 9-10 shot put; and Matthew Willingham of Cape Girardeau in the 17-18 pole vault.
