It was a day of comebacks for the Notre Dame Bulldogs as they came from behind to beat the Dexter Bearcats 3-2 on Saturday at Capaha Park.
The game featured a pitchers duel between Notre Dame’s Jack Evans and Dexter’s Beau Carrier as the two battled back and forth all day long.
Carrier, who got the loss, tossed 6 innings allowing 3 hits, and 1 earned run while striking out 2.
Evans also went 6 innings allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run, walking 4 and striking out 8.
“I struggled with my fastball command early on,” Evans said. “I got it figured out so I tried to come out in the second inning and get my slider to work and it started working so I was able to mix those two up.”
Multiple times throughout the game Evans fell behind and went to the slider to work his way back into counts.
“That’s a confident pitch (for me),” Evans said. “I’m comfortable with it and I feel like I can spot that up better than the fastball sometimes.”
It was the Bulldogs who struck first as Reid Morgan drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly.
It didn’t take the Bearcats long to respond as Carrier would help himself with an RBI triple to score Kaeden Kennedy who doubled the at-bat before in the top of 3rd.
Dexter’s Ryan Young delivered in the top of the 6th as he put the ball in play with two outs and after an error by the Bulldogs, gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.
TJ Bolen would shoot a double down the right field line that tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the 6th.
A wild pitch served as the difference as it allowed the Bulldogs to take a 3-2 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
“In that first game, we were just ramping up and ramping up,” Notre Dame’s Will Dodson said. “I think we were ready to go for this one. Their pitcher pitched well and we struggled a little bit but we kept chipping away.”
The Bulldogs’ day started with a matchup with Helias Catholic and it didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to fall behind as the Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
Notre Dame would battle back to walk the game off thanks to an RBI from Reid Morgan to win the game 8-7 in 9 innings.
Dexter (7-8) is back in action at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 24 when the Bearcats travel to take on Doniphan.
Notre Dame (9-6) will face a tough test as they hit the road to take on Portageville (22-2) at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 24.
“We just have to keep putting the ball in play and keep competing,” Dodson said. “As long as we do that good things will happen.”
