Registration is now open for the Buddy Ball baseball league, and board member Dave Elledge is excited about this upcoming season.
Buddy Ball made its first appearance in 2013 and was created to allow those with physical or developmental disabilities to experience the game of baseball firsthand while building a support network for individuals, families and the community.
“This league is very lively,” Elledge said. “We have great support from parents, many community members and folks that just love to come out to support these players. We have a PA system out there, as we announce their bio when they come to bat, play a lot of music and keep it riled up for up player that comes to the plate.”
From the creation of former board member Sonya Osborne, who had a huge heart for those with disabilities and wanted to find different ways to allow them to be active, turned into something much bigger. Elledge said he and three other board members saw the dream and take pride in keeping it going.
The concept of Buddy Ball is for those with disabilities to have an opportunity to play ball which they wouldn’t have the opportunity otherwise.
Elledge said Buddy Ball is nothing without its volunteers, who take the time to come out and provide help wherever needed.
“Our buddies are a huge part of what we do, and we couldn’t do without them,” he said. “They help players get to the bases and out to the field, level the playing field to where they can just be out there and enjoy the game. Some buddies just hang out with players and their families, ensuring they have a great experience.”
Buddy Ball originally had one league but expanded to give more opportunities to those that wanted to participate. Teams now include ages eight through junior high and high school and older. Both groups will cap out at 40 players per league, and Elledge encourages people to sign up quickly as he’s seen great interest already in the first three days of registration.
Elledge said they have about 30 spots still open and our younger league and only a few spots for the older league, but once they hit the 40 mark, sign-ups will cut off.
Registration for the Buddy Ball league will close on Saturday, April 22, and for people that are interested in being a buddy, sign-ups will start on April 23. To register, visit www.pbbuddyball.com.
